Katana Engine, formerly known as KTGL (Koei Tecmo Game Library),[1] is a game engine developed by Future Tech Base, formerly known as the Technical Support Department,[2] which is the R&D department within Koei Tecmo responsible for developing game engines among other things.[3]
Development of the KTGL engine started around 2000, in order to develop games for multiple platforms with great efficiency. At the time, the KTGL engine was just a software library with individual production tools. Only in around 2010 did the development of a full-fledged integrated production environment start.[4]
AI technology is increasingly used in order to streamline the development process. Most Koei Tecmo titles have been developed using the Katana Engine as of 2024.[5]
