Mute on focus lost without excl. fullscreen

Summary by Chick'n'Duck

There is no logical relationship between fullscreen and mute on lost focus. All combinations are possible.

Would a game in a window (with or without a border) not always have audio on? Does anyone know a counter-example? Otherwise the setting would always be "false", if there is no exklusive fullscreen. Or in other words: this setting makes only sense for fullscreen.

This setting actually grew in popularity with multiplayer titles that had the player frequently Alt+Tab back and forth between the game and other applications, such as World of Warcraft etc, of which many were also played in (borderless) window mode to facilitate efficient multitasking.

It was basically used to have the game automatically mute itself when out of focus so that the audio of the game couldn't interrupt whatever else the user might be currently focus on (Flash games, videos, VoIP, what have you).

Even to this day basically all of Blizzard's games have this option available regardless of whether an actual 'exclusive fullscreen' display mode is available or not.

So the audio is muted, even when the game is played in a window?

Aemony (talkcontribs)

Yes, when it doesn't have focus aka is "in the background" as the option is also often called.

I have my counterexample. There is no relationship between fullscreen and mute on lost focus, as I theorised in the beginning.

Could we change the note section for Closed captions to include sound effects as this would make it more clear. "Very rare feature. Applies for games with spoken dialogue and sound effects. For games with no speech or text-only dialogue, leave the field "n/a"."
