Availability

The demo is available on the official website.

Best version

For Windows and Mac OS X users the GOG.com version of Torchlight is the best because it is DRM-free and includes extra downloads including artwork, soundtrack and a level editor.

For Linux users, the Ubuntu Software Centre version of Torchlight is the only version available, and therefore the best. WINE emulation also works very well.

Mods

Torchlight is designed to be extremely friendly and open to modders and has an extensive and strong modding community. Almost everything can be modded in; from translations, graphics and sound to maps and classes.

TorchED level editor can be found at GameFront.

Most mods are found on the Runic Games Fansite.

Mods are located in game's application data.

HotSpot Mod Manager 2.0

HotSpot

This is a portable Torchlight mod manager for Windows. Using this tool, users can immediately download and install mods from Runic Games Fansite directly into the mods directory.

Currently in beta, v2.0.

Recommended mods

These are all conservative mods that essentially conserve the original gameplay. However, if you don't want to hassle too much with mods without altering the game experience too much, download Wulf Beginner's Mod Pack.

• SSS Torchlight Texture Project - Retextures most of Torchlight
• GenderMod - Adds opposite gender variants of existing classes
• Merchant Pack - Adds additional merchants
• Better Balanced Sale Prices - Balances the amount of gold acquired when selling
• Total Respec Mod - Adds 10 different respec potions into the game for resetting character's stats and skills.

These are not mods so don't download them with HotSpot.

These are usually Windows-only.

TorchKit

This is a portable settings and mod configuration editor for Torchlight which uncovers all hidden settings from "settings.txt", (but not local_settings.txt or Ogre.txt) configuration file which includes camera shake, blood, keybindings, automap zoom etc.

Other notable utilities

• TorchlightCam - Enables camera control
• Torchlight Multiplayer - Enables Internet and LAN multiplayer (only works on Steam; possibly obsolete)

Game data

This game does not follow the XDG Base Directory Specification on Linux.

To clear save games from the game once Steam Cloud has been used you will need to remove the save files from the Steam Cloud folder as well. The Windows and Mac save files are compatible but have to be manually synced by removing all existing save files for the target platform and then copying the source files to the regular save file location.

Netbook mode

Netbook mode is nothing more but an option that sets almost everything to the lowest possible quality to be playable on a netbook.

Resolution option isn't locked in this mode.

AIFREEZE	Toggles monster AI.
ASCEND	Teleports one floor up.
CLS	Clears console text.
DISABLEPET	Toggles player's pet.
FPS	Toggles information about: FPS, version, room filename, level seed, level depth, Active Units / Missiles, triangle, batch, Mesh Bytes, Meshes, Materials, Texture Bytes, Particle Cache Count, Particles Updating / Rendering, Particle Systems Created / Updating, Particle Techniques Created / Updating, Particle Emitters Created, and Particle Affectors Created / Updating.
GOD	Toggles "God Mode" (invulnerability and insta-kills).
GODSPEED	Toggles GOD and SPEED.
HELP	Displays a list of commands.
LEVELUP	Increases XP to next level.
MONEY #	Gives money in the amount entered.
PATHING	Toggles pathing debug display (paths appear as white, vertical planes that denote where objects are moving).
PLAYERNOTARGET	Stops monsters from targeting the player.
RELOAD	Reloads textures (may crash your game).
ROOM	Displays the filename and path that corresponds to the room that the player is in.
SPEED	Adds speed to the character.
STRENGTH #	Gives you an amount of Strength.
DEXTERITY #	Gives you an amount of Dexterity.
MAGIC #	Gives you an amount of Magic.
DEFENSE #	Gives you an amount of Defense.
ALLSTATS #	Gives you an amount for all stats.
FAME #	Gives you an amount of fame.
SKILL	Displays the list of skill numbers and names.
SKILL NAME/#	Gives you an amount of skill points for the skill that you name.
SKILLPOINTS #	Gives you the amount of skill points.
IDENTIFYALL	Identifies everything in the inventory (not for items in the pet inventory).
