Key points
- Most bugs and performance issues have been fixed with official patches.
General information
Availability
- All versions require Steam, including both retail and digital distribution.
Improvements
Enable multi-CPU
Follow this link and its instructions. Do not touch ANY files located in the steam folder, use only the Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini (or Skyim SkyrimPrefs if ".ini" is lacking) located in %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\
unless told otherwise by a mod author.
Patches
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch is a comprehensive fan-made patch. Its goal is to fix every bug unresolved by Bethesda.
Utilities
- Skyrim Character Editor allows users to create custom characters.
Modifications
- Skyrim Workshop is the official hub for game mods, fully supported by Steam. Workshop mods are automatically updated through Skyrim's launcher.
- Skyrim Nexus is a major hub for Skyrim mods. Some mods can only be found on the Nexus, and it has a unique mod management tool.
- Better Oblivion Sorting Software is a program which uses a list of known mods to modify Skyrim's load order. Using BOSS can resolve some mod conflicts.
- Wrye Bash is a 3rd-party mod utility. It can be used to install/uninstall mods, create compatibility patches and edit .ini files.
- Skyrim Script Extender is a third-party executable which expands Skyrim's modding capabilities. It is required by many mods.
- SkyUI overhauls Skyrim's default interface. It's optimized for keyboard and mouse controls, includes sorting options, has a search feature and supports high resolutions.
- Categorized Favorites Menu expands Skyrim's default "favorites" interface. It allows for better control with keyboard and mouse and utilizes the entire screen.
- Some mods are incompatible with other mods. Make sure you read the description of mods you install to see if they have compatibility patches or known issues with other mods.
