Re-Volt

From PCGamingWiki, the wiki about fixing PC games

Template:Infobox

Re-Volt is a 1999 radio controlled car racing game, developed published by the now defunct Acclaim Entertainment for the Microsoft Windows platform. Produced for pre-NT versions of Windows, Re-Volt is not, in its basic form, compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, however, there are a multitude of fan fixes available to aid running the game on a modern system.

Windows

Availability

Because both the developer and publisher of Re-Volt (Acclaim) is now defunct, the game is now classed as abandonware, and can be freely downloaded on the internet.

Best Version

It is preferable to possess an original version of the game, as it is currently the only way to secure the original soundtrack legally, as, unlike the game, it remains under copyright protection. Users can use their original soundtrack with other versions if they possess the original game, however.

Patches

Although the last official patch (v1.1) was released on 16th September 1999, the community has created an suitable fan patch, which is generally updated every fortnight.[1]

v1.2 (Fan Patch)

Re-Volt (v1.2) is a fan patch which aims to develop a more fully featured version of the game, bringing it up to modern standards and introducing the most popular fan features. It is also fully compatible with modern version of Windows, including XP, Vista and 7. The patch's fan developers have suggested the final release version will be produced by the end of 2012.

Additional features:

  • Full support for all NT versions of Windows, including XP, Vista and 7
  • Support for Wine on Linux and Mac[2]
  • Wide screen and multi-monitor support
  • Anisotropic texture filtering, improved display and font style
  • Support for international keyboard layouts
  • New language introduced (Dutch)
  • New content and game modes
  • Optimisations and bug fixes.

Detailed information on all additional features can be found here. There is also a list of planned future additions.

Unresolved Issues

Re-Volt v1.2 has a number of unresolved issues currently being worked on by fans. Outlined below is a basic listing of the largest of these issues, but further information can be found here under 'Known Bugs'.

Crashing and Freezing

A number of situations will currently cause the game to crash, none of which have yet been resolved. Currently, these include:

  • Crashing during multiplayer
  • Rare freeze due to propagation of bad data over the internet
  • Freeze resulting from incompatibility of some Antivirus programs with Miles Sound System
  • Rare instances of PC restarting after reaching a menu screen

Graphical Glitches

Graphical glitches are common in v1.2. A basic listing of unresolved issues is as follows:

  • Improper rendering of vertex colors (dev mode only)
  • Rare artifacts with cloud rendering
  • Lines and glitches with graphics card forced anti-aliasing turned on
  • Screen flickering when attempting to change display mode after using the Print Screen button
  • Visible artifacts in the rear-view camera (known as the blue triangle bug)
  • Visible texture seams in-between ploygons
  • Transparent areas displayed incorrectly in Print Screen shots
  • No objects in frontend after exiting a track with Objects Edit Mode
  • Objects clipped when viewed at a specific angle

Multiplayer

There are a number of issues with the game's multiplayer mode, including crashing and object inconsistencies, as well as bad syncing and bad starts, often preceeded by a hang at the loading screen. Saving replays also often results in a bug. There is currently no known fix for any of these issues.

Other Issues

  • Bomb fuse disappears after hitting a clone pickup
  • Trouble restoring after Alt+Tab in Windows Vista or 7
  • Issue with configuring certain joystick controllers
  • Unable to read certain game states if Caps Lock is on
  • Multithreading inconsistencies during loading

Video Settings

The following lists settings available for the updated v1.2 fan patch version of Re-Volt[3]. The original game lacked many modern graphical settings such as anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, as well as widescreen.Template:VideoSettings

Mac & Linux

With use of the v1.2 patch, it is now possible to play Re-Volt in Mac and Linux using Wine[4]. It has also been ported to Mac using its own wineskin.[5] Original versions of Re-Volt are playable using Wine, but this leads to extended loading times and other general gameplay issues.

Additional help for running the game on Linux is available here.
