A poor port of the console game with few PC options.[1]
Controller is highly recommended over keyboard and mouse controls.

Key Remapping

Key remapping is supported.
A number of inconsistent keys by default:
  • 'Q key' responds to on-screen prompt 'A to continue'.
  • 'End key' brings up menu (and 'Escape key' does nothing).
Mouse 4 and 5 cannot be remapped.[2]

Controller

Use of controller is highly recommended.[3]
'Hot swap' between keyboard and mouse controls and controller is available.[4]

Installation problems

If you have problems installing the game (progress bar stuck during installation) then this may be relevant to you.
I noticed that the setup utility was trying to install DirectX and Games For Windows Live (GFWL) and getting stuck opening their install programs.
If this happens make sure that DirectX and GFWL are installed prior to trying to install Dark Souls. You can get them from Microsoft, or if you have the dvd version they appear to be in their own folder on the dvd.
Open Task Manager (ctrl-shift-esc) and navigate to the Processes tab, then run the Dark Souls setup.
When "Dxsetup" or "Gfwlsetup" show up in Task Manager's processes, right-click and cancel the processes to continue to the next stage of installation. You might have to be quick with the gfwlsetup because it seems to disappear from the processes list and just hang the installation if you don't cancel it fast enough. Should work fine from there. Tested on Windows 7 64 bit.
