Hype: The Time Quest is an adventure game based off of Playmobil's medieval castle toy series released on several platforms including the PC. The PC version is notorious for not running on Windows XP and later versions of Windows.

Installing the Game

64-bit versions of Windows can't run the CD installer due to it being a 16-bit application. Trying to run the installer in Windows 7 x64 will cause the process to freeze in the background and require the task manager to close. One workaround is to install the game on a 32-bit copy of Windows and transfer the installed game to a 64-bit computer. A virtual machine will also work such as VirtualBox if you don't have another computer available. When installing the game select 'Full Installation'. The game installs to three locations:

  • Your specified install path. The default is C:\Ubi Soft\Hype - The Time Quest . This is where the game data is stored and the two executables for Direct3D and Glide mode.
  • C:\Windows\Ubisoft . This has an application called SetupUbi that shortcuts point to to play the game, various *.dlls, and Ubi.ini, the settings file for the game.
  • The registry key location is HKLM\Software\Ubi Soft\Hype - The Time Quest . Only a version string is stored here.

Copy the game data folder to your 64-bit windows and place the Ubi.ini folder into a C:\Windows\Ubisoft folder. The other files in the Ubisoft folder are not needed to play the game and SetupUbi has the same problem as the installer on the CD. The registry key is also not required to play the game.

Playing the Game

The executables to play the game are MaiD3Dvr_bleu and MaiDFXvr_bleu for Direct3D and Glide mod respectively. Neither will work with default settings in Windows 7 x64. Set the compatibility mode for the executables to 'Windows 2000' to get the game to run without immediately failing. To change the game settings run 'UbiAssistant' as an administrator or edit the Ubi.ini file in the C:\Windows\Ubisoft folder. There is a patch available at Ubi.com labeled 'Voodoo 3 and Direct3D'. It is uncertain if this is required but is recommended to install. The patch is ~4.01 MB if the Ubi.com link goes down and a replacement download needs to be found.

The Direct3D mode will suffer serious graphical glitches that render the game unplayable by the end of the intro. There is no available fix for it. nGlide is a Glide wrapper available at Zeus Sooftware which does support Hype - The Time Quest. Download and install it and then download the patch for the game. The patch is in the compatibility list at the bottom of the nGlide download link and then search for the entry for Hype - The Time Quest. The patch says to turn videos off but this is not a required step but it is recommended. The game will still play with videos but besides the Ubisoft logo video at the start of the game there are only two others at the start and end of the game and playing the video may cause future issues. Turn it on when you start and finish the game but turn videos off at all other times.

Run MaiDFXvr_bleu.exe to use the glide wrapper, remember to set compatibility mode to Windows 2000, and Hype - The Time Quest should run on Windows 7 x64!

Where to Buy

Unfortunately Hype: The Time Quest isn't available on any digital distribution service and is not sold in stories anymore. Ebay appears to be the only place that still has copies available.
