Windows
Version Differences
The best version is available from the developer's website, which provides both a Steam key and a DRM free version (the same executable as from GOG.com).
Issues And Fixes
Black Screen, Torches Visible
A known issue regarding certain graphics card drivers. Resetting the graphics drivers from the control panel can fix this issue.[1]
Blurry Graphics
Blurry textures and menu items are almost always caused by the Mipmap Detail Level in the AMD VISION Engine Control Center.[2]
- Set Mipmap Detail Level to 'Quality'
- Disable Catalyst AI
- Everything else to App Controlled/off.
Mouse Cursor Missing
Disabling mouse pointer trails fixes this issue.[3]
DirectX
The game requires DirectX but does not install it itself. You will need to install DirectX separately.
Run Game On Integrated Graphics
This is possible using a utility called Swiftshader, which offloads shader processing onto the CPU. However, this comes at a heavy performance price.[4]
Enable Vsync
Enabling vsync may fix some issues, such as periodic freezing. This is because the game does not have a framerate limiter, therefore it will tax the graphics card very heavily.[5] Vsync forces a framerate cap.
Open the config file at C:\Documents\Almost Human\Legend of Grimrock\grimrock.cfg
Change verticalSync = 1
to code>verticalSync = 2.
Unresolved Issues
Field Of View (FOV)
Although the narrow FOV may be considered a design choice, it is not a value that is user-editable.
Save Game Data
Save Game Folder Location
- Windows:
C:\Documents\User\[Username]\My Documents\Almost Human\Legend of Grimrock\
Controller Support
The developers have said the game was designed solely for use with keyboard and mouse, but fans have already started trying to get Xbox 360 controller support working in-game.[6]
System Requirements
Mac & Linux
The developer has announced a Mac port will be created.[7]
WINE
Some users have suggested that it is possible to run Grimrock on Mac and Linux via Wine. The most popular method on Mac is to use the Porting Team wrapper. On Linux it may be possible to play the game by installing Windows DLLs via Wine tricks (required DLLs include DirectX dlls and Visual C dlls).
This thread at the official forums details some ways to get it running under WINE: http://www.grimrock.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=489
