This could be due to a directshow filters issue. You need to put X3:TC into ffdshow (or other problematic filters) blacklist[1]

Alt-Tab behaviour

Enabling "Run game in background" in the in-game options menu fixes issues with not being able to get back into the game after Alt-tabbing out.
