Released in 1998, Baldur's Gate (known as Baldur's Gate 1 or BG1) takes place along the Sword Coast in the setting of the Forgotten Realms. The player character is an orphan raised in Candlekeep, a fortress turned library, by the mage Gorion. The protagonist is pursued by the warrior Sarevok and in the end learns the truth of their relationship.
In 1999 the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack was released. This raised the experience cap and included new spells, quests, and items. Additionally there were some improvements made to the game engine. This was followed by the sequel, Baldur's Gate 2 (2000) and it's expansion Throne of Bhaal (2001).
System Requirements
If using Baldur's Gate Tutu or Baldur's Gate Trilogy please use the Baldur's Gate 2 system requirements.
Where To Buy
Good Old Games is currently the best place to buy the game.
Older versions, such as the original release, may have issues running on newer machines. Avoid the Dungeons and Dragons Classic Anthology, as it not only has issues installing on newer operating systems but also will not work with Baldur's Gate Tutu or Baldur's Gate Trilogy.
Good Old Games Installation Guide
The digital copy sold by GOG can be installed with any current operating system. Windows 7 is supported by the .exe file from GOG but it is possible to install to a Unix-like operating system using Wine. This will be the focus of this guide.
Windows
For Windows XP and beyond, installation should be as simple as running the .exe file downloaded from GOG. If you wish to run the game on the Baldur's Gate 2 engine, follow one of the guides below for either Baldur's Gate Tutu or Baldur's Gate Trilogy.
Linux and Wine
Requirements
- setup_baldurs_gate.exe file from GOG.com
- Wine 1.3
Installation
- Run from terminal: wine ~/Downloads/setup_baldurs_gate.exe
- Follow on screen prompt
The path can be customized during installation but the default will be: ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/GOG.com/Baldurs Gate
Running
To play the game use the shortcut created in the application menu under Wine.
Baldur's Gate Tutu
The Pocket Plane Group created the BG1Tutu mod to import the content of Baldur's Gate into the enhanced game engine of Baldur's Gate 2. This allows one to create characters using the class kits in BG2 and unlocks higher game resolutions.
Requirements
- A full installation of Baldur's Gate 1 (With or without the TotSC expansion)
- A full installation of Baldur's Gate 2 (with or without the ToB expansion)
