Game crash after TTG logo (CelebrityPoker.exe has stopped working)

A patch issued to the game in November 2010 caused game crashes for a large portion of the players. After starting the game, a TTG (TellTale games) logo would display and after a brief moment the game would freeze, eventually popping up a crash message stating that CelebrityPoker.exe has stopped working. The crashes seem to be most prominent on 64bit operating systems.

Since TellTale Games refused to acknowledge or address the issue, the community devised two methods of making the game run.

The methods recommended by the developer (verifying Steam cache, re-installing the game as well as re-installing the Steam client) do not work for most users affected by this problem.

Run as Administrator / Compatibility Mode

Rather than launching the game from Steam, navigate to the game executable in Windows Explorer. It is typically located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\poker night at the inventory\ . Right-click on CelebrityPoker.exe and select Run as Administrator command. In many cases it should solve the crash issue.

Some users also reported enabling compatibility mode to help with game's stability. To run the game in compatibility mode, right-click on the CelebrityPoker.exe and select Properties. In the new window that pops up navigate to the Compatibility tab, check the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows Vista (Service Pack 2). While at the Compatibility tab, you may also check the box next to Run this program as an administrator and then confirm with the OK button, closing the Properties window.

Delete Preferences and Saves

Should the first method fail, you may have to delete the preferences and game save files, forcing the game to create new, uncorrupted versions. The files in question reside in My Documents\Telltale Games\Poker Night at the Inventory folder.

It is recommended that you first delete your preferences, stored in the prefs.prop file and attempt running the game. Delete the save games only if the other steps fail, as you will lose your progress in the game (the Team Fortress 2 rewards will not reset, as long as you have redeemed them already). You may consider backing up your saves and preferences in another folder, rather than straight-on deleting them.
