Metal Gear Solid is a stealth-action videogame from Konami that first launched on the PS1 in 1998. It's the first game in the Metal Gear Solid series and is a sequel to Kojima's early MSX2 computer games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. It was well received by critics and was heralded by many as one of the most important games of all time.

Issues and Fixes

Graphics issues with Nvidia/ATI cards:

  • Once downloaded, extract the contents into the install directory of the game and overwrite any files.
X:\Program Files\Metal Gear Solid

"Software rendering mode" error.

  • Go into the game directory.
X:\Program Files\Metal Gear Solid
  • Right click MGSI.exe and choose "Properties".
  • Go to the "Compatibility" tab and check "Run in compatibility mode for: Windows 98/Windows Me" and check "Run this program as and administrator."
  • After that you'll have to run it in windowed mode. To do this, go to the Start menu and pick "Run...". Add " -w" at the end of the executable path (C:\Program Files\Metal Gear Solid\MGSI.exe -w). The game should run allowing you to either go to the options and select 'software rendering' (to play in full-screen) or continue to play the game in windowed mode.

Unresolved Issues

  • Real-life footage shown in the game during certain cutscenes are replaced with a green rectangle.
