Patches

Official Patches

  • v1.01 (EU/US) is the only official patch, released by Elixir before its demise in 2005. It fixes a number of issues, however it should be noted a number of issues still remain. Fixes in v1.01 included the following[1]:
    • Multiple crash bugs resolved
    • Minor scripting fixes
    • Fixes to researchable items
    • Object and menu item name changes
    • General bug fixes

Unofficial Patches

  • v1.1 (US) is an unofficial fan patch collated by Evil Planet user "walking fishy". Although designed for the US release, most game elements introduced should function with European versions of the game[2]. The patch improves upon many game elements that had previously frustrated players, including the following (further detail can be found on the Evil Planet Wiki):
    • Improved henchman stats and reduced Act of Infamy times
    • Hotel exclusive rooms now available to build elsewhere
    • Some exterior objects may now be built inside
    • Loot items carry over to second island
    • Other requested fan features and bug fixes
  • The Unofficial Steam Patch (US/EU) is a fan patch developed by Steam user "LennardF1989" for the Steam version of the game. It includes many of the fixes and improvements from the US and EU official patch, as well as the unofficial v1.1 patch, and the content included on the Bonus CD, which is freely available on the internet.

Instructions:

  1. Install the game using Steam
  2. Run the patch-installation, but chose a different direction, not the Evil Genius one. I used for example my Desktop
  3. Copy all files, EXCEPT, the \ReleaseExe\EvilGeniusExeStub-Release.exe from the temp folder where you installed the patch.
  4. Paste this into your Evil Genius folder: <DriveLetter>:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/evil genius/
  5. Run the Bonus CD and install normally on your Evil Genius installation folder.
  6. Run the unofficial patch and install normally on your Evil Genius installation folder.
  7. Edit the unreschanger .ini file to your height/width, and then move the .ini and .dll files to the Evil Genius/ReleaseExe/ folder
  8. Run the game

Save Game Folder Location

  • Windows 7:
    C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files(x86)\VUGames\Evil Genius\DynamicResources\Layouts

Skip Cutscenes

Go to the folder:[3]

DynamicResources/Config/

Now open up concept.cfg with notepad.

To skip the intro movie find: [State] and then change:

StartupState=0 to 1

To skip the copyright screen scroll to: [Transitions] and then change:

Mac & Linux

Evil Genius can be run on Mac and Linux using Wine - the existing skin holds a platinum rating on WineHQ.

Widescreen fix

In addition to the #gamefix instructions for Windows, Wine users should take a few additional steps:

  1. Download V1 of the unreschanger patch:
    http://wsgfmedia.com/uploads/paddywak/screenshots/justcause/ureschanger.zip
(If you use V2 then the minion icons in the World Domination screen will be far too large)
  2. Edit resolution.ini to use the resolution you want.
  3. Place the d3d9.dll and resolution.ini files in the /evil genius/ReleaseExe/ folder as normal
  4. Run the program winecfg
  5. Select the Libraries tab.
  6. In the new overrides for library drop down list select d3d9.
  7. Click the Add" button. This will add the override d3d9 (native, builtin).
  8. Click OK.
  9. Launch the game normally (via Steam)
The first time you set this up and run the game it may crash during launch. The second and future times you launch the game it should work.
