The game crashes either soon after launch or when starting a mission, especially with an "Error #fffd" or "VCPI compliance" error.

Disable expanded memory (EMS)^[1]
Open the DOSBox .conf file, find the [dos] section and change `ems=true` to `ems=false`.

Set CPU core setting to normal^[1]
Open the DOSBox .conf file, find the [cpu] section and change `core=auto` to `core=normal`.

To run the game without the CD, copy the .TRE files from the CD to the installation folder and edit the paths to them in WG.CFG.
Press Alt+X to exit the game.
Press Alt+O when in a mission to access the options menu (for all game settings and to restart/abort the mission).
