People Stuck on Old StarCraft Screwed? Old Instructions Removed

6
RaTcHeT302 (talkcontribs)

I saw that the old instructions have been removed. What happens if someone wants to play an older version of the game?

There are plenty of things which can be done with the old versions of StarCraft, such as game hacks or AI making. Some versions of StarCraft also feature their own localizations which might not be available on Battle Net.

I think ideally the best and easiest solution should be provided and that duplicate solutions should be avoided in most cases, but I think that some of these solutions should be documented, even if some are worse.

I'm not really complaining as I don't really care but I just felt like mentioning it.

Now that it's free and there's basically no reason to stick to the old patches, I believe it is best not to maintain old workarounds and fixes.

Karasuhebi (talkcontribs)

I disagree. I liked playing the original game with patches that gave me a much bigger view of the map. The remaster doesn't give me that.

Solarstrike (talkcontribs)

Agreed, as there is a growing retro enthusiast market - there needs to be preservation of these old workarounds in case one needs to use the original executables.

By that logic, all games that have been "remastered" should not use their original game's pages - which so far hasn't happened except here.

Widescreen Resolutions - InsectLoader.exe works just fine

Can anyone confirm if this still works in version 1.18?

RaTcHeT302 (talkcontribs)

I think you had to do something extremelly overly specific, such as running any hacks as an administrator, which no one ever bothered mentioning at all.

Move to "Starcraft" sans "1" ?

Should this be moved to just "Starcraft", as that was the original title, or has it gained enough reputation as "Starcraft 1" ? Move or set up redirect?

Garrett (talkcontribs)

Pages use the official game name. Conflicts are handled by adding the year in parentheses (e.g. SimCity vs. SimCity (2013)). Redirects can also be used for common queries that aren't the official name (e.g. SimCity 5).

RaTcHeT302 (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure if you read the history but this is an older question, I simply added it as a thread instead of removing it entirely seeing as it was incorrectly added in the header itself. Just in case.

The article is currently named Starcraft: Brood War. This is not the name of the game, it is simply Starcraft. Brood War is an expansion pack released later (then bundled together in the Starcraft Battle Chest).

While there are numerous game changes in Brood War (new units, etc), the core game is the same between Starcraft and the expansion. They are patched together and if an issue occurs in one version, it will appear in the other, so there is no reason to have separate articles on the game and expansion. They are for all practical purposes (especially since they are no longer sold separately) the same game. But the name is not Brood War, it is merely Starcraft.

Thanks Pendragon, you are totally correct. I'll move this over now.
