Verifying DRM and DRM protection for Quake 4

I am trying to check if Quake 4 is DRM protected and I'm getting an error

I couldn't move Quake4.exe to another location until I turned on Safe Mode, and after I rebooted I am receiving that error message. Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if there is another way to verify DRM and run the game?

Some games listed may have had DRM added to them after initial release.

I didn't see any way to edit this page (I'm new to this sort of thing) but I've been testing some of these games by removing them from my Epic Game Store folder and disabling my internet before attempting to run them.

I figured that for now I would use this post to list any games that wouldn't run properly without the internet and/or Epic Game Store.

-Riverbond (after launching, was given an error message about not being able to connect to the Epic Game Store. was not able to get to title screen or main menu)

-Shadow tactics: Blade Of The Shogun (When I attempted to launch, it showed my epic game store tab, then the game simply closed itself. This may be DRM or just a bug on my end, but I figured it's worth mentioning)

Probably games that got EOS implemented after release for achievement purposes etc.

On release of the Epic Games Store there were no major reason to implement EOS, and as EOS lacked a generic "ensure Epic Games Store client is running" verification check, developers had to write their own.

Nowadays since EOS started becoming more and more relevant for games on EGS, it has been implemented more frequently -- even in older games -- and as a result the game also gets some form of EGS related verification check as part of it.

Ergo, a previously DRM-free* game has become "DRM protected" enforced by its EOS implementation.

I can confirm your findings partially:

  • Riverbond has a requirement on EGS as it doesn't support signing in to EOS without it. I've updated the article to indicate the EGS requirement.
  • Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun restarts itself through EGS if launched without it running, though that requirement can be bypassed using the -EpicPortal command line argument. However while the EGS requirement can be bypassed, the EOS requirement cannot. So even if you launch the game using the argument, you'll still be prompted (once) to sign in to your Epic/EOS account through a web browser on launch before you're able to play the game. That article has been updated to indicate the EOS requirement.

Thank you for your help, Aemony. :) I'll continue to post any games I can find here that give me trouble with launching on their own. It's a darn shame that some of these previously DRM-Free games are now losing that trait. Makes me wish I'd started my project of making backup copies of mine sooner. I've gone ahead and update the title of my thread to better reflect the actual issue that seems to be taking place with the games I'm finding.

Another one I just found to be problematic was "Spirit of The North". Upon launching the application, the Epic Game Store tries to open and I receive the error "The UE4 Infused game has crashed and will..." "Fatal Error!" (The title of the text box cuts off)

- Submerged: hidden depths - Launching the application gives an an error message "Error : (name of game file path) Submerged CreateProcess [] returned 2. "

-Tropico 5 - nothing happens when I click the executable.

-Unreal Tournament - nothing happens when I click the executable.

-Wonder Boy and The Dragon's Trap - nothing happens when I click the executable.

-Fallout 3 - Nothing happens when I click play in the launcher or when I click on the executable.
