Patches

Patch 1.1 is the latest patch for the game.

Updating Steam version

Add missing registry file[1]
The Steam release inexplicably has version 1.0 instead of 1.1. The standard patcher can be used, but a missing registry entry needs to be added first.
  1. Use the Registry Editor to open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node.
  2. Create the Ellipse Studios\Submarine Titans key.
  3. Create a DWORD value, name it Version and set it to 01000000.
  4. Download and install the 1.1 patch.
  5. Run the game.

Issues fixed

"Internal Error" on launch

Run ST.exe as administrator, and optionally in compatibility mode for Windows 98 / ME.[citation needed]

Notes

Does not occur if installed in a non-standard folder, or if the user has full permissions to the installation folder.
This fix will also disable the intro videos. To enable them, set the compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

External configuration program does not work

On modern Windows, the STConfig.exe external configuration program does not appear to save settings properly, regardless if "Apply" was clicked.
Run STConfig.exe as administrator[citation needed]

"The program can't start because d3drm.dll is missing"

Add d3drm.dll to the installation folder[2]
  1. In the Submarine Titans disc, go to directx
  2. Open the directx.cab file
  3. Copy the d3drm.dll file and paste it into the installation folder.
Digital releases include this file in the game directory by default.

“The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application”

Enable DirectPlay

Broken video playback, showing as black screen

Edit video script files manually, forcing playback from 24-bit to 16-bit[citation needed]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\video
  2. Open startup.vps
  3. In all lines starting with PlayVideo, change the entries of COLOR_24BIT to COLOR_16BIT
  4. Repeat as above for the file campaign.vps

Notes

This should make the videos play, however there is likely a loss in color fidelity due to forcing them to play in 16-bit color mode.
