SGW3 - Improvement Project/Unofficial Patch[edit]

The Improvement Project/Unofficial Patch is a mod for the game that comes in two variants. The Improvement Project extensively modifies the game, adding new gameplay features, and significantly altering the core gameplay. The Unofficial Patch is focused on bug fixes, leaving the original gameplay largely intact, but fixing issues such as broken key rebinding, day/night cycle, laser sights, texture filtering, and NPCs disappearing at ~250 meters or after being unobserved for longer than two seconds.

Issues fixed[edit]

Memory allocation crash[edit]

Game crashes due to a memory allocation error even with the required 8 GB of RAM.
Increase Windows page file to a fixed size (e.g. 8192 MB)[1]
See this community guide from Tom's Hardware on how to change the page file.

Long loading times[edit]

Exclusive fullscreen with Vsync enabled may cause progress bar in loading screens to stall near the end.
Disable VSync[1]
Use windowed/borderless fullscreen mode[1]
These fixes shorten loading times, especially when launching the game for the first time.

Game crashes and returns to Windows[edit]

Savegames folder fix[citation needed]
  1. Go to <Steam-folder>\userdata\<user-id>\368070\remote\savegames\.
  2. Create a backup savegames folder.
  3. Launch game and exit.
  4. Copy the backup savegames folder to <Steam-folder>\userdata\<user-id>\368070\remote\savegames\ and paste and replace.

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/368070/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (368070) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
