Quantum Break is a singleplayer third-person shooter developed by Remedy Entertainment with assistance from Asobo Studio. Xbox Game Studios served as publisher for the digitial version while Nordic Games published the retail release.

The game was first released via Microsot Store on April 5, 2016 and later via Steam on September 29 of the same year. The Steam version generally delivers improved compatibility, stability and performance compared to the Microsoft Store version, see Version differences.

The PC version only allows streaming the live action episodes. They cannot be downloaded (as on Xbox One), thus it is not possible to view them offline or with a slow internet connection.[3]

Version differences

The Steam version is Direct3D 11 only, while the Microsoft Store version is Direct3D 12 only. The Steam version is compatible with Windows 7 and newer, while the Microsoft Store version requires Windows 10 or newer.
Performance of the Steam version has been improved on Nvidia hardware and stayed the same on AMD hardware compared to the Microsoft Store version. The Steam version does not suffer from graphics driver crashes on Nvidia hardware, whereas the Microsoft Store version did.[4] It is unknown if these graphics driver crashes have since been fixed for the Microsoft Store version.
Steam-version is more up-to-date compared to the Microsoft Store version, as Remedy announced in August 2016 that they wouldn't release any more updates for the Microsoft Store version, while the last update for the Steam version got released in October 2016.[5][6]

Monetization

Type Notes
One-time game purchase The game requires an upfront purchase to access.
Sponsored Includes product placement for Nissan and Microsoft (Live-action cutscenes show characters using Windows 10 and other Microsoft products and services on their computers).
Subscription gaming service Available via Xbox Game Pass for PC.

Video

By default, renders at 2/3 of the selected resolution then 'temporally reconstructed' to selected resolution.[8] Originally couldn't be disabled, but option to toggle it was added in a later update.[9][10] Set Upscaling to Off to render at native selected resolution, but this will come at a high performance cost.[11]

Issues fixed

Live action show plays too fast

On Windows 11 the game suffers from a bug that causes the live action show to play unrestricted, causing sped up video and garbage audio.[19]
Update Windows 11 to build 22621.1194 (KB5022360) or later[20]

Jack wearing an eyepatch

Playing the Microsoft Store version while signed out of the Store app triggers this issue.
Open the Store app and sign into the Microsoft account that owns the game before playing[21]

Nvidia SLI support (Steam version)

SLI support can be set manually for the Steam version (up to 95% scaling).[22]
Use Nvidia Inspector[22][23]
  1. Open Nvidia Profile Inspector.
  2. Find the Quantum Break profile
  3. Set the SLI compatibility flag for its DX11 mode to 0x080002F5
  4. Go to the SLI section
  5. Set number of GPUs to SLI_PREDEFINED_GPU_COUNT_DX10_FOUR
  6. Set Nvidia predefined SLI mode on DirectX 10 to SLI_PREDEFINED_MODE_DX10_FORCE_AFR

CPU doesn't support POPCNT instruction

If your CPU doesn't support the POPCNT instruction, then your CPU is below the system requirements of this game. Still, with the below workaround, you might be able to run the game. Still, expect the game to run poorly on your PC.
Although the developers state that POPCNT instruction is required[24] to run the game, in reality this is not true, at least for the Steam release.
For Windows Store version see this workaround
Remove POPCNT check in rl_x64_f.dll[25]
  1. Get hex editor. HxD is free, portable and easy to use.
  2. Open <path-to-game>\dx11\rl_x64_f.dll in hex editor. Use "Browse local files" in Steam game options to find path to Quantum Break folder.
  3. Search for 0FBAE117730A hex string.
  4. Replace it with 0FBAE1179090 hex string.
