of TWO entries at one... string Windows: -hkcu/ -/appdata/ OSX ...

and how not to made it Windows -hkcu/ Windows -/appdata/ ...

There is examples as existed articles, but it nw should be finded manually. And few games have two such entries. AppData for appdata config files and separate saves as it indended to be (Wc3 Classic, not normal one, use Documents and separate SavedGames for user content, but configs still in WinRegisty, where can be edited location for documents path)

So it should be exampled here directly, or provided link to such game. Here such example http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Warcraft:_Orcs_%26_Humans

BTW, Warcraft 3 Classic atricle, beign dedicated to exactlty Classic version 1.31.1\+PTR, not describe that it use two path for user files (savedgames and documents for maps\campaign, that missed cause it indeed not a saves, but should be described anyway, especially cause user should find download and put DemoCampaign file to restore this content in Classic)

Summary by Aemony

Lol, that was just ThatOneReaper's initial version of the Editing Guide that he worked on in his userspace back in 2015 before we moved it over here.

The links in question was just intended to point the user to the target just below the table, the XDG support header just 2-3 lines below.

Funny how it took 5 years for the missed links to be caught, lmao!

Nice catch!

Are globs allowed for paths? I've seen some articles where the save path is just "<path-to-game>", but that includes executables and other things that aren't actually saves or config. I'd like to help narrow down some of these to, for example, "<path-to-game>/*.sav" (e.g., that would include both 1.sav and 2.sav).

If it's allowed, could this page document the standard glob syntax that we should use? For example, maybe it's best to just stick with * and ** since they're pretty simple.

Edit: It looks like at least * is already fairly common on the wiki (although some pages use non-standard notation for the same concept, like ? or #).

The "file" template

I noticed that some pages use Template:File (which redirects to Template:Code) when mentioning specific files in a path. For example, Graveyard Keeper uses this syntax for one of its entries:

$HOME/Library/Preferences/unity.Lazy Bear Games.Graveyard Keeper.plist

Is that standard/expected? I don't see anything about it documented on this page, and it seems a little strange to me that only part of the path would be stylized differently. Should Template:File (or Template:Code) really be used inside of Template:Game data?

I did see this documentation: PCGamingWiki:Editing_guide/Article_formatting#Files_and_file_paths. But since Template:Game data tables never seem to do that for the whole path, I'm assuming it only applies to inline text or prose, not to Template:Game data.

No, there is really no reason to use the file template inside the game data template

The file/code template basically does two things to the font: 1) Dark background 2) Monospaced font

However, the game data template already sets a monospaced font. And, as you noticed, it looks pretty strange to stylize just part of the path with a dark background.

{{File}} / {{Code}} is meant for fixboxes and other appropriate places. Not, typically, in any table that already has monospace styling applied to its column.

I don't even technically think you can use it in Windows rows for game data / save data as that is bound to conflict with the property assignment that we have hooked up to those rows.

The codes for the paths would be helpful. For example "{{p|game}}" becomes <path-to-game>. Currently only the second can be found in the documentation. --Chick'n'Duck (talk) 15:28, 7 January 2020 (UTC)

I've both the editing guide as well as the template documentation. They currently do not cover exactly the same thing, however the editing guide goes more into real-life paths while the template documentation goes more into each particular argument that's supported.
