GameSpy online services have been shut down (see Network for solutions).

Key points

Non-Steam versions may crash on launch on Windows Vista and later; for a workaround see game crashes on launch (non-Steam versions).
Official online multiplayer no longer works due to GameSpy services being shut down. Multiplayer modes can still be played through OpenSpy.
Despite supporting uncapped framerate, much of the game's logic was designed around 30FPS.[1]

Issues fixed[edit]

Game crashes on launch (non-Steam versions)[edit]

Non-Steam versions may crash on launch on Windows Vista and later.
Steam version has been patched for compatibility with modern versions of Windows (despite the warning on the Steam store page).[4]
Fix crash on modern systems[5]
  1. Download Midnight Club II Vista Patch.
  2. Extract archive to <path-to-game>
  3. Run the patch to apply it. If write access is denied, uncheck "read-only" in mc2.exe properties.

"Failed to connect to GameSpy server" error[edit]

The GameSpy master server has been shut down. Use OpenSpy as an alternative.
Note that recently openspy.org stopped working, so you'll need to replace .org with .net or use the updated .exe linked here.

  1. 1.0 1.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/12160/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (12160) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
