Mantle was a proprietary low-level rendering API from AMD developed in cooperating with DICE. It was designed as an alternative to OpenGL and Direct3D (DirectX) and showcased the advantages of a low-level API with lower CPU overhead. It lead directly to the development of the Vulkan API as AMD donated the components of the Mantle API to Vulkan's creators Khronos to give them a foundation to build and standardize a low-level API upon.
Mantle was officially only supported on Windows, though support for it were removed in a driver update in May 2019 with the release of v19.5.1 of the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition display drivers.[1] Since then, users who needs to continue to use the Mantle API must use older versions of the display drivers, or make use of the GRVK display wrapper to translate the Mantle API calls over to their Vulkan equivalents.
