Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX is a collection of RPG games developed and published by Square Enix. It is part of the Kingdom Hearts series.

Originally released individually as Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix on PlayStation 3 in 2013 to 2014 and later released as a single compilation title on PlayStation 4 in 2017, HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX is a compilation containing Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and cinematic remakes of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts Re:coded.

The game was released on Epic Games Store on March 30, 2021 following an announcement on February 11, 2021 during a livestream, marking the first time the Kingdom Hearts series has made its way to PC.[2]

On June 13, 2024, the game was released on Steam, with an update to the Epic Games Store version released the same day. The new version fixed issues for RTX 3000/4000 GPU users[3], although it also introduced more crashes than before for some people.[4] This release has also fixed FMVs for the first time on Linux, although only for the Steam Deck at the time - a workaround exists.

Availability

The Epic Games Store version requires an internet connection to launch the game and switch games. Losing an internet connection in the middle of a game will periodically bring up a warning message that can be dismissed.[5] This limitation is not present on the Steam version.[6]

Essential improvements

Kingdom Hearts Re:Fined

Currently only compatible with the Epic Games Version by downgrading the game version and completely incompatible with the Steam version.

This mod aims to fix problems, crashes, and bugs that are present within the PC Ports of all legacy-class Kingdom Hearts games, as well as introduce quality-of-life features to the games.[7] At the moment, only releases for Kingdom Hearts I and II are available.

Skip intro videos

Add -reboot=true as a launch option

Notes

Only applies to the launcher and Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.

Install Copyright Screen Skip mod
  1. Download LuaBackend Hook
  2. Follow LuaBackend Hook's setup instructions

3. Download the appropriate version of the mod for the desired game:

Quicker Copyright Screen can be used for KH2 instead.

5. Extract Title Screen Logo Skip.lua into %USERPROFILE%\Documents\KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX\scripts\kh1\ (or \kh2, \khbbs or \khrecom according to the game)

Launcher bypass/replacement

Use Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 Launcher[8]

Notes

Lightweight replacement for the original launcher. Also allows to launch Melon Mix instead of the movies as an option.
Add KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX.exe %command% to Launch Options[8]

Notes:

Replace the EXE name with some other game to launch a different game.
Create a file named steam_appid.txt in the game folder and put 2552430 in it[8]

Notes:

Doing it this way allows to add every entry as a separate non-steam game and launch them separately. It also allows to launch the games by just opening their exe's. Achievements are still obtainable.

This one needs work, there is a hex edit to display the game in 21:9 however there is a huge issue where all the UI elements zoom in and are cut off from the top and bottom, there is likely an additional hex edit to be made to fix the issue. I'll still provide the fix in case anyone wants to help figure it out.

Issues unresolved

Game frequently crashes on AMD RDNA3 GPUs

Issue has been partly (not all affected GPUs are listed) acknowledged by the developers [18]

Game crashes seemingly randomly on NVIDIA GPUs

The games may crash in random locations during gameplay if using an NVIDIA GPU, primarily when (after a hour of gameplay): opening any kind of pause menu, going into a scene transition, or engaging combat[19]
Limit the framerate to 60 FPS[20]
  • Crashes are less likely to occur at lower framerates, however it's not a guaranteed fix.
Enable "Refresh Rate"[21]

Audio issues

The game may have crackling sound, sound cut-offs at high volumes[22] or missing voicelines.[23]

Stuttering when VRR is enabled

The game stutters if G-Sync, FreeSync or any other VRR method is enabled. Disabling it fixes the issue.[24][25][26]

Black screen during FMVs on Linux

Use Proton Experimental[27]
Add SteamDeck=1 %command% to Steam Launch Options[28]

Uneven frame pacing causing stuttering

This game suffers from frame pacing issues at any refresh rate above 60Hz.
Instructions[29]
  1. Using the Nvidia Control Panel or AMD Adrenaline Software, Cap the framerate to 60 FPS and force Vsync on for the desired game.
  2. From the in-game settings for the desired game; set Screen Mode to either Borderless Windowed or Fullscreen; then set Frame Rate to Unlocked; lastly set Refresh Rate to OFF.

Game randomly going back to windowed if using other modes during alt-tabbing

If using borderless, can most often be observed by quickly moving the mouse to the top right of the window right after alt-tabbing.

Cut content

Some cutscenes and textures were altered in the Western releases. Following mods restore them to their original counterparts from the original Japanese version.

Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories

This game was not updated with a "Final Mix" version like the rest of the collection. Following mods fix the inconsistencies that come from that, putting the game more in-line with the rest of the collection.

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 Notes regarding Steam Play (Linux) data:
  2. This mod changes a character design from how it appears in all versions (including Japanese) to a version depicted in some pre-release materials, as opposed to bringing Western releases in-line with the original Japanese.
  3. The actual game requires DirectX 12.

Game relies on internet connection to connect to EOS for statistics and will not boot when launched offline. Disconnecting from the internet during gameplay won't kick the player out, but a message will appear periodically asking the user to check their internet connection. This message can be dismissed by clicking the "Retry" button that appears on the message, but the message can't be dismissed when it appears as a result of switching or launching games from the menu while offline.
