Functions similarly to version.
A faithful higher resolution icon for Windows can be downloaded from the Files section.
A demo is available. Note that it uses an older version of the engine and may have compatibility issues on modern systems.

Essential improvements[edit]

Patch 1.4 is the last official patch.
Patch 1.5 is an unofficial patch that adds several graphics settings, additional effects and DirectX 9 renderer. It is highly recommended to install this patch. The latest version can be found here.

Mouse Speed Fix[edit]

Use -framelimit ###, replacing ### with your desired framerate to fix mouse speed issues (requires patch 1.5). This should be set to a consistently achievable framerate, as the mouse speed issues are caused by uneven frame pacing.

Graphics feature State WSGF Notes
Widescreen resolution
Install 1.5 patch if some resolutions do not work.
4K Ultra HD
Even with the unofficial patch, support for resolutions above 1920x1080 appears inconsistent.
Field of view (FOV)
Use the -window command line argument.
Borderless fullscreen windowed
See the glossary page for potential workarounds.
Anisotropic filtering (AF)
Forcing anisotropic filtering has a noticeable impact on visuals, disabling a pseudo "depth fog" on distant textures, not just ones at steep angles.[2]
Anti-aliasing (AA)
See the glossary page for potential workarounds.
Vertical sync (Vsync)
See the glossary page for potential workarounds.
60 FPS and 120+ FPS
The game does not handle fluctuating frame rates well; a frame rate cap is recommended. The cap should be determined by the lowest common frame rate achievable by the user's machine (such as 60 FPS on a low-end system, or 120 FPS on a high-end system). Set with -framelimit ## parameter, replacing ## with the desired frame rate (requires 1.5 patch).
High dynamic range display (HDR)

Restore hardware sound[edit]

Hardware sound has been disabled in the initial release of Giants due to performance issues at the time. On some systems, this may not be an issue and you may see an improvement in sound quality with this option if your sound card supports EAX. This will also restore occlusion and reverb audio options in-game. or retail version
  1. Download the missing files here.
  2. Extract gs_ds.dll, and all .EAL files to the <path-to-game>.
  3. Start the game with -snd3d argument

Install the unofficial 1.5 patch first, if you want to use it.
Retail version only
  1. Be sure to install the 1.4 Patch with eax support (Version 1.4 w/ EAX)
  2. From CD1, Copy all *.EAL files from the EAL folder inside the <path-to-game>
  3. Start the game with -snd3d argument

The language for the version can be changed with Language Selector.exe in the installation folder or Start menu.[3]

Issues fixed[edit]

Imported savegames are not recognized[edit]

Create an empty savegame first[4]
  1. Start a new game (no progress is needed).
  2. Close the game.
  3. Go to <path-to-game>/savegame/SaveGame0, and overwrite mission.sav with your backup mission.sav.

You can make a backup of the game's configuration by exporting the corresponding registry key, see configuration file(s) location.

Other information[edit]

Remove censorship[edit]

Delphi was originally going to be topless, as evidenced by early trailers and the boxart, however she wears a bikini in the final game.
Create empty file[5]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\bin
  2. Delete or rename arpfix.gzp.
  3. Start the game.

Delphi will still wear a bikini during the loading screen.

GiantsHook Graphical Overhaul Mod[edit]

Adds GeForce 3 exclusive effects and DirectX 8 renderer.
Single-player only.

Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/557750/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (557750) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
