More in-depth image quality comparison performed on a 1440p monitor (with 2560x1440 set as the resolution of the desktop in Windows) without antialiasing, zoomed in 400% using nearest neighbor, to showcase how the end result is affected by the desktop resolution of the monitor in Windows and the selected in-game resolution. Regardless of what resolution is being used for the desktop in Windows, or selected in-game, the game will internally render the scene at 1920x1080. Then that rendered image will be scaled to the selected resolution in-game using bilinear filtering, and finally an additional nearest neighbor operation will be performed to resize the image once more to the desktop resolution of Windows.
Left:
2560x1440 resolution selected.- Game renders at 1920x1080, then scaled to 2560x1440 using bilinear filtering, and finally displayed as 2560x1440 (no nearest neighbor operation occurs).
Middle:
1920x1080 resolution selected.- Game renders at 1920x1080, then scaled to 2560x1440 using nearest neighbor, and finally displayed as 2560x1440 (no bilinear filtering operation occurs).
Right:
1920x1080 windowed.- For comparison purposes, as 1920x1080 windowed is where neither bilinear filtering nor nearest neighbor taking place.
To summarize:
- The game renders at 1920x1080 regardless of [chosen resolution] in-game or [desktop resolution] of Windows.
- The game scales the 1920x1080 image to [chosen resolution] using bilinear filtering (if different).
- The game scales the [chosen resolution] image to the [desktop resolution] of Windows using nearest neighbor (if different).
