Mute on focus lost

Set mute in background[citation needed]
  1. Install Special K by following the Special K Unofficial Guide.
  2. Start the game and press Ctrl+ Shift+← Backspace to toggle Special K's Control Panel.
  3. Expand "Window Management" and "Input/Output Behavior".
  4. Enable "Mute Game" under "Background Behavior".

Issues unresolved

Changing language

Language option is only given when first starting the game. Changing language requires complete deletion of save data.

Issues fixed

Run the game at screen refresh rate

Fullscreen mode defaults to 60 Hz, even if the screen refresh rate is set higher than that.
Set screen refresh rate[citation needed]
  1. Install Special K by following this unofficial guide.
  2. Start the game once and close it to allow the configuration file of Special K to be created.
  3. Open <path-to-game>\d3d9.ini or %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Mods\SpecialK\Profiles\Matrix.exe\SpecialK.ini, depending on the installation method used.
  4. Change RefreshRate=-1 to RefreshRate=0 under [Render.FrameRate].

Extremely low performance

On many configurations, the game performs badly. One way to improve the performance a bit is to enable Force Object LOD in game's launcher - this however comes at the cost of poor model quality. The game's performance can be further increased to constant 60 FPS by using dgVoodoo 2, but it doesn't work correctly with widescreen.
Instructions below
  1. First, install ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix.
  2. Run MatrixOptions.exe.
  3. Pick the desired resolution and check Force Object LOD.
  4. Before hitting play, rename the Widescreen Fix's d3d9.dll to dinput8.dll, and then simply copy the following files from the downloaded dgVoodoo: MS\d3d9.dll and D3DImm.dll, to <path-to-game>.
  5. Now press Play. The game can be run directly from Matrix.exe from now on.

Notes

Running MatrixOptions.exe will reset the resolution, so it's not advised to use the executable again.
Widescreen Fix's d3d9.dll allows listing modern resolutions in MatrixOptions.exe. If the game doesn't have a proper widescreen resolution set in the config file (generates itself on first launch of MatrixOptions.exe) or in MatrixOptions.exe, the game won't show anything if the resolution is forced manually in dgVoodoo2 - widescreen resolutions need to be set in the game in the first place.

Missing texture filtering on character clothes

The PC port by default has unfiltered textures for character clothing.
Force texture filtering using dgVoodoo2 (tested with version 2.75.1)
  1. Follow this DirectX 9 installation guide.
  2. Open dgVoodooCpl.exe and select <path-to-game> from the dropdown menu if it is not selected already.
  3. Go to the DirectX tab.
  4. Under Videocard select GeForce FX 5700 Ultra and set it's VRAM to 256 MB.
  5. Under Texturing select the Force anisotropic 16x Filtering option.
  6. Tick the Fast video memory access box and untick the dgVoodoo Watermark box.
