Death end re;Quest is a singleplayer third-person JRPG game developed by Idea Factory, Compile Heart and published by Idea Factory International.

The game released on May 16, 2019 on Steam. At release, the game only supported an internal resolution of 1080p, which was updated on July 9, 2019 to support a native 4K resolution.[2] Resolutions between 1080p and 4K remain upscaled.

Graphics options
Graphics options

Graphics feature State Notes
Widescreen resolution
The game only supports 16:9 resolutions and only 13 predefined resolutions are available.[Note 3]
Multi-monitor
Stretched when attemping to force exclusive fullscreen. When selecting borderless windowed the game runs on a single monitor.[3]
Ultra-widescreen
Stretched when attemping to force exclusive fullscreen. When selecting borderless windowed the game runs in 16:9 while omitting the rest of the desktop.[4][5]
4K Ultra HD
Can be enabled through the "3840x2160 4K Native" resolution option. Every other resolution is upscaled or downscaled from 1920x1080.[6]
Field of view (FOV)
Uses a 45° Vertical FOV during gameplay.[7]
Windowed
[Note 4]
Borderless fullscreen windowed
[Note 5]
Anisotropic filtering (AF)
See the glossary page for potential workarounds.
Anti-aliasing (AA)
Uses Temporal AA, but the option is tied to the "Post-Processing" setting.
Vertical sync (Vsync)
Use Special K alongside setting "Presentation Interval" to 0 to disable VSync.[10]
60 FPS
Capped at 63-64 FPS when using a monitor with a higher refresh rate than 60 Hz.[11]
120+ FPS
See High frame rate.
High dynamic range display (HDR)
See the glossary page for potential alternatives.

High frame rate

Raise the framerate cap to 240 FPS by hex editing[12]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\resource\bin\
  2. Open Application.exe in a hex editor such as HxD.
  3. Search for 41 55 55 85 41 and replace with 41 71 1C 87 40.
When finding and replacing these hex values, make sure that the find/replace tools are using the "Hex-values" mode.
Alternatively, the hex value can be changed to use a custom framerate cap by dividing 1000 by the desired framerate cap. For example, a 30 FPS cap hypothetically can be achieved by 1000 / 30, then using HxD's replace tool's floating point number utility to find and replace the 16.66666603 value with 33.33333333. This value can also be changed to 00.00000000 to disable the framerate cap entirely.
Modifying the framerate cap above 60FPS can cause 2D UI elements, the pause menu, and character bustups to animate faster, but regular gameplay isn't affected outside of the cursor when using "Search" in battle moving faster.
Some in-game cutscenes may have camera timing issues.[Note 6][13]
Character movement and cursor movement (When analyzing enemy weaknesses) in battles increases in speed above 60 FPS.[14]
Raise the framerate cap to 240 FPS by patching Application.exe[15]
  1. Download the FPS Uncap Patch.
  2. Unpack the archive (using the password mentioned in the file description).
  3. Launch the patcher and change the target file to <path-to-game>\resource\bin\Application.exe, before pressing "Start".

Issues unresolved

Performance issues

Several reports indicate that performance issues are present, even on hardware that is within the listed system requirements.[23][24][25][26][27][28]
Lowering the in-game graphics options may not result in significant performance improvement.[29]

Exclusive fullscreen mode stretching selected resolution to desktop resolution

This happens when using a desktop resolution with an aspect ratio that is wider than 16:9 widescreen, regardless of whether aspect ratio preservation is enabled in the Nvidia Control Panel or AMD Radeon Software.[30]

Issues fixed

Resolution limit lower than current resolution when using DPI Scaling
The game limits resolution options based on the DPI Scaling settings set in Windows. For example, if a 3840x2160 resolution is being used, but DPI Scaling is set to 200%, the in-game resolution will be limited to 1920x1080.[31]
Windows 7 users may need to use the fix mentioned for 4K resolution to work properly, as noted by the announcement for the 7.09.2019 Build update.[32]
Instructions[33]
  1. Open the <path-to-game>\resource\bin directory, right click Application.exe, and go into Properties.
  2. Open the Compatibility tab, and go into Change high DPI settings.
  3. Enable Override high DPI scaling behavior and have the dropdown box set to Application.
  4. Press the OK button to exit out of the DPI properties, and then press Apply in the file properties to save changes.

Notes

  1. When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/990050/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (990050) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
  3. Available resolutions:
    • 640x360
    • 720x405
    • 800x450
    • 1024x576
    • 1152x648
    • 1280x720
    • 1360x765
    • 1366x768
    • 1600x900
    • 1920x1080
    • 2560x1440
    • 3840x2160
    • 4K Native
  4. If using the same vertical resolution as the windowed resolution, the window will clamp to a different value. For example, when running 1920x1080 windowed mode on a 2560x1080 resolution, the window resolution will clamp to 1061x1080. This isn't prevalent in Borderless or Fullscreen mode.[8]
  5. The "Fullscreen" option is a borderless window stretched to the display resolution. This can cause distortion on anything other than 16:9 resolutions.[9]
  6. One example being the crane in the Shipyard, as it may transition the camera back to the third-person perspective (during gameplay) early before the animation is finished.

Attempting to force a custom resolution with an outdated build will cause occlusion culling to be visible, issues with camera transitions, minimap issues, and objects clipping based on camera rotation. Tested using hex editing on game builds before the 7.09.2019 update.

When the 1920x1080 option is selected in-game, it centers on the screen similarly to what would happen at 2560x1080. When selecting 2560x1440, the image appears zoomed in, due to having a higher vertical resolution than what typically happens with native resolution.
