Online activation is only performed when the metaserver is reachable.
The game can be played in a demo mode without a key (non-default game and score modes locked; maximum amount of players in demo games, maximum amount of demo players in any games and whether demo players can host games are defined by the metaserver).
In Steam version, a key is received from the metaserver in response to SteamID, and is inserted automatically. Steam demo version will still receive a full game key instead of a demo one.
Players using demo authentication key can play non-default game and score modes if these are set after they join.
All versions use an activation key for multiplayer. The hash of the key is sent to the server, which validates it against the metaserver, removing the player if it is bad or is already used by another person in the same game.
