Essential improvements

Use ScummVM

Use ScummVM 2.6 or newer, currently in daily builds. If you're using a digital copy of the game then just point ScummVM at it and go. If you're using a CD version of the game, then combine all the files from all the CDs into a single folder on your computer and point ScummVM at that.

Minimise CD-ROM swapping

The original game comes on four CD-ROMs. Disk swapping can be avoided if multiple CD-ROM drives are available by putting the game's CD-ROMs in different drives, assuming that each drive will get a separate drive letter.

Use DOSBox

With DOSBox, the IMGMOUNT command can be used on each CD-ROM image onto a different virtual CD-ROM drive by adding lines similar to these in the DOSBox configuration:

[autoexec]
MOUNT C "11H"
IMGMOUNT D "11H/CD/11th_Hour_CD1.iso" -t iso
IMGMOUNT E "11H/CD/11th_Hour_CD2.iso" -t iso
IMGMOUNT F "11H/CD/11th_Hour_CD3.iso" -t iso
IMGMOUNT G "11H/CD/11th_Hour_CD4.iso" -t iso

Widescreen resolution

Uses the "Windowed" and "Borderless" window hacks. Tops and Bottoms will be cut off, although Cursor still has access to these areas.
Edit ddraw.ini to set borderless windowed mode[citation needed]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Open ddraw.ini.
  3. Edit windowed=true
  4. Edit border=false
  5. Edit boxing=false
  6. Edit width and height to the desired resolution.
    • Edit width=1280 and height=960 for 1280x720
    • Edit width=1366 and height=1025 for 1366x768
    • Edit width=1600 and height=1200 for 1600x900

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/255940/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (255940) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
