Version differences

The original retail version is a DOS game and requires the manual to progress. If you lost your manual (it's an old game, it happens) you can find replacements here (Commodore version) and here (Apple II version). Note that despite being from different platforms they are still reverent for the DOS version (other than the installation/system requirements sections).
The Interplay 10 Year Anthology version lacked a setup program, of which was used to reset the game to the default state whilst optionally keeping characters and their stats, granting the game replayability. See below in Essential improvements for an alternative to said program.
Digital distribution versions run the DOS version through custom build of DOSBox. This version of DOSBox is used to implement the new, optional features on top of the emulated DOS version. The custom build is open source with link to the source code right in the EULA.

Essential improvements

Utilities

You can find both a replacement reset program for the 10 Year Anthology version and Character editor for cheating here (along with a variety of other miscellaneous files such as uploaded saves).

Mods

You can find a variety of mods (mostly for improving the artwork/sprites) here. Note some links are broken.
