Issues fixed

Play in 16-bit color depth

Learning AI system only runs properly in 16-bit color depth mode. Windows 7 only provides compatibility mode with 8-bit color depth (256 colors).
12noon's Display Changer and the Windows batch script below can be used switch the system display to 16-bit during the game automatically and switch back to 32-bit, without manually changing the Windows display modes.
Automatic 16-bit mode instructions[3]
  1. Download and install Display Changer.
  2. Copy C:\Program Files (x86)\12noon Display Changer\dccmd64.exe (64-bit) or C:\Program Files\12noon Display Changer\dccmd.exe (32-bit) to <path-to-game>.
  3. Open Notepad or your favorite text editor and insert:
@echo off
dccmd.exe -depth=16
vf2.exe
dccmd.exe -depth=32
@echo on

4. Save this to <path-to-game> as VF2.BAT or something else.
5. Start using your new script file to play your game.
6. (Optional) Make a shortcut for VF2.BAT to your Desktop or Start Menu, for easier access.

Alternate automatic 16-bit mode instructions

This method creates a Windows shortcut that will let Display Changer automatically restore your original color depth after the game exits.

  1. Download and install Display Changer.
  2. Create a Windows shortcut to Display Changer by right-clicking your Desktop and selecting New > Shortcut.
  3. Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\12noon Display Changer\dc64.exe (64-bit) or C:\Program Files (x86)\12noon Display Changer\dc.exe (32-bit).
  4. Press Next.
  5. Enter a name for the shortcut, such as VF2.
  6. Press Finish.
  7. Right-click the new VF2 shortcut on your Desktop and select Properties.
  8. In the Target field, go to the end of the line, add a space, and append this: -depth=16 "<path-to-game>"
Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\12noon Display Changer\dc64.exe" -depth=16 "C:\Program Files (x86)\VF2\vf2.exe"
  1. Press OK.
