Direct3D and official system requirements

1
Aemony (talkcontribs)

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time and properly adding references to the d3d notes parameter. Though could you also move the "despite the official sys req..." line in the reference?

E.g. for edits like one: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/w/index.php?title=CTU:_Marine_Sharpshooter&diff=prev&oldid=1481528

Most people wouldn't question the listed Direct3D version, nor compare it to the system requirement, so I don't think having it outside of the reference itself serves any purpose.

Cheers!

Atlantis: The Lost Empire – Trial by Fire HD/4K

Hi, saw your edit to the Atlantis: The Lost Empire – Trial by Fire page which included a note that 4K works with the same behaviour as HD but when trying to set a widescreen resolution above 720p the game crashes for me. Could you please confirm if these resolutions work on your end and on what system settings?

AlphaYellow (talkcontribs)

Hey. I'm sorry, I should've removed the notes for multi-monitor, ultrawide and 4K as they aren't possible at all, just forgot to do it. And yes you're right, any resolution above 720p seems to crash the game, either with dgVoodoo2 or not. Thanks for reminding it.

Gordonfreeman (talkcontribs)

Thanks for confirming! I've been talking to a few people who know more about the engine to try and get 4K up and running and turns out it is a bit of an involved process. Hopefully after some time I'll be able to add that in :)

AlphaYellow (talkcontribs)

That's great! I hope they can get other LithTech games running properly too in the near future! It's a finicky engine for sure.

Anisotropic filtering forced through the GPU panel

4
Bata gaga (talkcontribs)

After making a change on the GTA III page, I have received a mail saying:

"Editor's summary: When it's possible through the GPU driver control panel, the AF setting should be set to False, and the notes field empty so the Glossary reference can appear, as not everyone uses NVIDIA cards."

Is this really the case, though? Almost every page on this site has the "Can be forced through the GPU panel." written in the notes for AF. And if it was the case, this would have nothing to do with the type of a GPU panel, since both AMD and nVidia have the option to force AF through their respective panels. Hence, I strongly disagree with leaving the notes field empty, since most of the new users simply won't go to the glossary link for a general solution to a specific problem. It makes more sense to have the field filled with info, BUT I wouldn't disagree with leaving the icon as X instead of the "hackable", since both are true (which was the only change I made). An admin should have this resolved, since if you were right, that would mean probably a HUNDRED pages have this wrong, and I just don't think you are right about this.

AlphaYellow (talkcontribs)

No, since the Glossary is more comprehensive about giving different solutions to the problem, and also an admin reverted changes I did about this topic before and told me that when it's possible to force AA or AF through the GPU's driver control panel, the field should be left False with empty notes, as to reveal the glossary note, so it should be left as such. About the other pages that are left like that, they simply weren't all edited yet to reflect such changes. Unless there is a very specific fix that needs to be made for a specific game regarding AA/AF, then that should be in the notes, which it isn't the case here.

I have an unrelated question concerning mods for GTA III. Mod Loader for GTA III requires the game executable to be 1.0, it doesn't work with 1.1. Should this be noted on the page, since it isn't noted on the download page of the mod, or is this covered by the previous "...the v1.0 executable is recommended" note in the Essential Improvements section?

Bata gaga (talkcontribs)

ok, then I shall change the other pages to fit this, too, if you claim it is admin approved.

If the covers share the same extension, then replace the original, don't upload it separately. Thumbs already work fine.

AlphaYellow (talkcontribs)

Yes, I tried it before, but the new versions never show up in the articles somehow, unless I change the file entirely

AlphaYellow (talkcontribs)

Oh sorry, they need to have the same extension as the original one?

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

> Yes, I tried it before, but the new versions never show up in the articles somehow, unless I change the file entirely

You need to purge the cache (More->Purge Cache), sometimes several times.

> Oh sorry, they need to have the same extension as the original one?

Yes. If it's JPG image it can't be replaced by PNG image and vice versa, but in this case both were PNG so it's possible.

Macgovern (talkcontribs)

If and only if the cover shares the same extension as the original, yes. Also, the reason why covers (and images in general) which get updated don't immediately show up on the pages they're on is 1) the wiki has to process the new image, 2) your browser needs to update or clear its cache of the affected pages (Control+F5 is the usual key combination to do this), and 3) the page's internal cache may need to be forcibly cleared by going to the More dropdown menu on the affected wiki articles and selecting Purge cache from the list of issues.

AlphaYellow (talkcontribs)

Thanks to both of you, I'll keep that in mind. I've edited and created many articles, but never really touched the covers much before, so that's why I was a bit confused haha.

Question regarding v-sync

3
Macgovern (talkcontribs)

I've noticed in a couple of game articles you've recently edited that you claim those games lack any kind of v-sync in the notes for 120 FPS - despite v-sync being marked as hackable.

Examples:

If v-sync can be hacked, then the statement regarding there being no v-sync should be removed since it can, in fact, be added. I realize that I'm unfamiliar with these particular games, hence why I'm asking you instead of making the edits myself. I'd rather confirm things than edit first, ask later.

AlphaYellow (talkcontribs)

Oh I'm sorry, I meant instead that Vsync is just off by default in those games, my bad.

Macgovern (talkcontribs)

No worries. I'll edit the articles so you have an example for these kinds of situations.
