Need details about your motive on removing "Slender: The Arrival (2013)"'s macOS directory. (+ Answer about Steam Cloud)

Hello Mrwolf202!

Just noticed that you changed the directory of both Windows, and removed macOs'.

While the new Windows' redirectory also works for the 2013 game, I'm really not sure why you removed the macOS one.

You mentioned in your edit as "The macOS directory was left blank before the Unreal Engine version was released." Which is correct, but I was the one who added said directory before I created the 2023 PCGW's page. Since I replayed and checked the Unity version on both Mac and Windows yesterday, and that's where I had found said configuration and save file for macOS.

Before I started creating the 2023's page. I completely updated the 2013's page (since it had contents from 2023 mixed together), as well as adding things that were never filled (Like macOs directory then).

Ah also, for the Steam Cloud, the 2013 never used any. Said Cloud is only used for the 2023 version, as I checked that too.

While waiting for your answer, I readded the macOS directory.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Swissoracle.

I was thinking of opening a discussion on one of the game pages earlier today, but I decided to install the game again before saying anything. Let me go through my thought process on the changes I made.

I changed the directories for Slender: The Arrival (2013), the Unity version of the game, because I was under the impression that it did not get an update that changed the save directory, but instead, it was just moved to the beta branch without changes. When I saw that the directories for the game pointed to .ini files, I figured it must have been a mistake because most Unreal Engine games save to .ini files. In contrast, most Unity games save data using the PlayerPrefs system, which saves data on the Register on Windows.

I also commented that I was unsure if the game still attempts to save to Steam Cloud because it used to save data to a file in the Steam Cloud directory that would be used to set the values of PlayerPrefs every time the game started. A terrible system, in my opinion, since it also saves settings to the cloud, but I have not tried publishing a game to Steam yet. So, I digress.

I left the macOS directory blank because it was left blank in the past, and I don't know where the game saves data on macOS. I figure someone else would correct that in the future.

I installed the game on my PC today to ensure the directories are correct and Steam Cloud is configured correctly because of mistakes this developer has made in the past with this game. However, I am currently busy, so I haven't checked it yet.

I appreciate your patience.

If the save directory for the Unity version of the game was changed, then feel free to make the necessary changes to the game page. I'll correct any mistakes later once I actually run the game on my computer.

Hello again, and thank you for your answer!

After doing some research on my side too, I found out that when the 2023 (UE5) update came out, configuration/save files were directly merged as the 2023 one, and not the 2013 (Unity) one anymore (Meaning : 2013's directory used to be the one 2023 now currently uses). So for Windows directory, your fix was actually more than right, thank you for fixing my mistake!

Now for macOS, it appears that it never changed its place, and after double checking on Mac, I noticed that I made a mistake with the configuration file path, being the config file. Put it by error as ".ini" which is, as you stated, being used by Ureal Engine, and not Unity. For the Unity version of macOS, the config file format is ".cfg". I corrected that mistake of mine on its PCGW page.

For Steam Cloud, I technically believe that, when the 2023 update wasn't out yet, the game didn't have any Cloud system until now. But as you also mentioned, the system is terrible because it can literally still take note of "PlayerPrefs" as a "Cloud" itself, if you get my meaning. Now that I might be doubtful as well, the best we can do is putting Steam Cloud's state to "Unknown", since we will have to dig in deeper. I will change the Steam Cloud's state too.

Reason why I quickly added back the macOS directory is because, as I said, checked directly via Mac, since I was the one who added the macOS paths that you removed, the one with the .ini mistake, of course, which is likely another reason why you removed them, since it was maybe "a copy-pasted" path from the 2023 version. So either way, you did good removing them as well!

If you want a gameplay experience of my P.O.V in the macOS version. It's itself pretty messed up in this game, due to the fact that the game uses obsolete frameworks/codes that macOS rarely support them in Unity, ending up being laggy, buggy, etc. In short : The macOS of the Unity version is extremely rushed.

I appreciate again for your answer, and I will put this topic as resolved. :D

All the best!
