Topic on Glossary talk:Multi-monitor

Sigma 7 (talkcontribs)

There's a need for defining multi-monitor. Depending on the person, it could mean something simple like the game functioning properly if there's a second monitor, to the intermediate step where it won't auto-minimize when you choose to do stuff on the second monitor, and where the game has explicit functionality on secondary monitors.

Without the definition, I feel I might be classing games incorrectly as supporting a second monitor (when it's really just okay with the second monitor.)

Without the proper hardware testing some things is a little bit more difficult. You could always possibly add a simple note specifying that X behaviour happens on Y monitors even though this is probably not the best solution ever.

I would say it's pretty much same as with high frame rate. Only put it to true if game actually supports and works with the feature, with multimonitor means game scales correctly to all displays and is playable. If the game works with the setup but doesn't take advantage of it (e.g. shows only in first display) then simply false. If there's problems (e.g. game stretches or HUD is spread accross the screens) then false and write note about it.

However usually multimonitor setup means three displays where most of the things are in center screen and extra screens simply widen the view. With dual monitor you basically split game from half so it may not look so good. However if you meant that can game be played with only one screen correctly without problems in dual screen setup, then personally I would state in multi-monitor notes that can game be forced to use only one monitor.

I have not run into a game that didn't work because I have more than one monitor. I think, at least up until now, the assumption was the same as on WSGF - that the game can work well across multiple monitors.

Multi-monitor means support for spanned resolutions--several physically separate displays that are combined into a single resolution which is then listed in-game alongside the normal resolutions.

The behaviour of additional displays (not part of the normal/spanned resolution being used in-game) is a separate issue; such problems should be noted when known but do not affect multi-monitor support status for wiki purposes.

I have added a tooltip to the video settings table explaining what multi-monitor means. The glossary article should also be reworked to make this clearer.
