Key points

Special Edition refers to many earlier builds of Tonic Trouble released around a year prior to the game's actual retail release date which contain many differences from the final retail version such as different level designs, graphics, lighting, music, tank-like controls, enemies and character designs, etc.

Essential improvements

Patches

Patches are available here. The TT_Castlepatch.exe patch is for version 8.5.1 which fixes an issue in North Plain. The ttsv_mat.zip patch updates the Matrox OEM version 8.6.6 to version 8.6.8 to fix a saving issue, note that save files created with version 8.6.6 will no longer be compatible after patching it to version 8.6.8 and must be deleted. The ttsndfix.zip patch is not meant for any Special Editions, but rather the retail versions of Tonic Trouble.

Playing on modern computers

Use dgVoodoo 2.

Play without the CD/DVD and shortcut

Unlike the retail versions, the Special Editions can be ran from the hard drive instead of the game disc with the created desktop shortcut, but the music and ambient sounds will not play unless configured using the following method below.
Copy files from disc
  • Copy from the game disc all the .MPX and .DSC files in \GAMEDATA\WORLD\SOUND to <path-to-game>\GameData\World\Sound.
The only downside to this is that the Intro video can't be played even when pasting the Videos folder into the game's installed directory because the game checks for the VIDEOS directory on the game disc only so the game automatically disables playback of the video.

Widescreen resolution

Widescreen resolutions
  1. Go to C:\Windows\Ubi\.
  2. Open ubi.ini.
  3. Set to any widescreen resolution and run the game from the shortcut (it will force the game to run at native desktop resolution).

Notes

This will decrease the horizontal FOV which cuts out part of the HUD and may affect playability of the game.
To enhance texture quality, open ubi.ini and set TexturesMem=Vram+ and for particles: ParticuleRate=High. You can also set Buffering=2 to enable Triple Buffering.

Input settings
