Theme Park World (known as Sim Theme Park in the United States and Brazil) is a construction and management simulation, and is a sequel to the successful 1994 video game Theme Park. Theme Park World was developed by Bullfrog Productions and released by Electronic Arts in 1999. Initially developed for Windows, it was later ported to PlayStation and PlayStation 2, as well for Macintosh computers. The Mac version was published by Feral Interactive.

Although there's no connection with Maxis's Sim titles, both Maxis and Bullfrog are owned by Electronic Arts, so it is still seen as part of the Sim series. It was followed by Theme Park Inc (also known as Sim Coaster) in 2000/2001.

Using golden tickets, users were able to buy new rides, attractions, shops and features (some of which were a bit controversial) on the game's website. Most of the staff the user can hire in Theme Park World are named after people who worked on the game.

Unlocking New Parks

Golden Keys

The game implements a golden key reward scheme that must be used to unlock new worlds. You begin a new map with $50,000 in the bank, and you start the game with 1 Golden Key, which can be used to unlock either the "Lost Kingdom" or "Halloween" world. This will not however use up the key.

Cost to unlock world:

  • Lost Kingdom: 1 Key
  • Halloween: 1 Key
  • World of Wonders: 3 Keys
  • Space Zone: 5 Keys

Golden Tickets

There is only one way of obtaining Golden Keys, and that is with winning Golden Tickets. Golden Tickets can be won in all parks, and the player wins them by meeting certain criteria. The player must obtain 3 Tickets to win a Golden Key, but the player can also spend these tickets on special rides. The rides attributes are hidden and must be unlocked using the tickets.

One common misconception is that the player must earn 3 tickets without spending them in order to win a Golden Key. However the game records how many tickets you have won, and will always reward the 3rd ticket won, regardless of how many the player currently has. This means that spending the tickets has no effect on Key generation.

Some common methods of obtaining tickets, which are standard in every park, are:

  • Your first 100 visitors to your park.
  • 200 Visitors in your park at one time.
  • Exceeding $15000 in profit.
  • High level of customer happiness.
  • 350 visitors to your park in 6 months.

Known Cheats

In game

  • Holding down the keys Left Shift, Left Ctrl and Left Alt is known to increase the number of new park visitors arriving.
  • When a visitor is playing on an attraction, you can raise the price of it while they are playing, and they will play the higher cost when they finish. The game decides whether or not to play based on the cost before playing it, but actually pays for the game after playing it.

Editing core files

  • Within the ~/data/levels there is a file called standard.sam, which can be opened using a standard text editor. There are various attributes that can be changed within this file:
    • Locate the string PeepInfo.MinimumEntryFee and change the value to something high. As long as your entry cost is lower than this value, the peeps will always enter without qualms. This is an easy way of increasing your funds.
    • Locate the string Arrival.MinPeople and also increase the value. This will change the minimum number of guests that can be dropped off, and is very useful when going for the attendance based Golden Tickets.
    • Locate the bank balance section and change the value of the starting value from 50000 to something higher. This will increase the starting balance for parks. This must be done before starting a new park for the value to be used.
  • Within the ~/data/levels/space folder, there is a file called global.sam, which can be opened using a standard text editor.
    • Locate the string keys.to.enter and change the value to 1, to allow immediate access to the park. This can be applied to the World of Wonders park as well.
