Key points

Fairly extensive graphics settings, with a good amount of exposed configs for fine tuning.
Official modding tools are available, but very slow if not patched as seen here. WolvenKit (which requires the official tools to be installed) should also be set up to be used as an all-purposes tool.[1]
NVIDIA Ansel has been implemented to the game, essentially functioning as a photo mode.

Essential improvements

Patches

The retail release requires a launch file to play. Further patches require activating on GOG.com.[2]

Skip intro videos

Use Skip Movies mod[5]
  1. Download the Skip Movies mod
  2. Extract the contents of the archive to <path-to-game>\mods\.

Skip loading screen narration videos

Edit user.settings config file[citation needed]

Add this setting:

[LoadingScreen/Debug]
DisableVideos=true

It will auto-skip loading screen videos (which you can also skip by pressing space on a keyboard and square/X on PS4/Xbox controllers respectively).

Installing mods

The Witcher 3 Mod Manager by stefan3372 which takes care of DLC/Mods folders and .ini files is recommended for the not-so-tech-savvy, but the ideal method is manual installation.

Supreme to Extreme Graphics Options

Aims to give players extended in-game graphics settings for beyond the bounds configurations. This mod goes beyond what the now-deprecated Witcher 3 Config Tools was able to achieve. An alternative (Tweaks) can be used instead as a more advanced in-game menu. Both mods can be extremely taxing on the GPU. While Tweaks is the more robust and up-to-date option, it also has other mod dependencies, namely either Unification Patch or Community Patch - Base. Use one or the other, not both.

The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project

Aims to improve the graphics by reworking models and textures to better quality.

Besserwisser's Fix Collection

Community mod with a massive collection of fixes that resolves a variety of bugs and visual glitches.

NPC Physics 60FPS Fix

Community mod that fixes hair, fur, clothing, medallions, weapons, etc, behavior when the game runs at different than 30 fps speeds. The mod was built to run with the E3 Geralt Hair Physics 60FPS Fix and Hairworks Hair Physics 60fps Fix that fixes the same problem on Geralt's non-hairworks and hairworks hair.

Performance fix for 2-4 core CPUs

Battle Encoder Shirasé (BES) + instruction - After the patch 1.06-1.07, it's almost impossible to play with 2 core processor. It's a small tool that throttles the CPU usage of the process you “target”: for instance, you can limit the CPU usage of a process which would use CPU 100%, down to 99%, like in this case. In result, the game becomes playable.

Widescreen resolution

Edit user.settings config file[citation needed]
  1. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\user.settings with a text editor.
  2. Find Resolution=XXxYY and set your resolution (e.g. Resolution=1152x648).
  3. If you want to use a resolution lower than 1024x768, also find FullScreenMode=X and Change X to 1 or use borderless mode.
  4. Save the file and launch the game.

Field of view (FOV)

Add FOV slider (Patch 1.30)[8]
  1. Download FOV Slider and Custom Localization Fix.
  2. Extract modFOVSlider\ and modCustomLocalizationFix\ to <path-to-game>\Mods\.
  3. Extract modFOVSlider\bin\ and modCustomLocalizationFix\bin\ to <path-to-game>.
  4. Start the game and set the FOV using the slider in the options menu.
Going over 89 will break interior lighting and cause severe rendering/performance issues. Game uses Hor+ scaling with vertical measurement; 89/90 is equivalent to 119/120. If you like 110 or 100 or 90, then you want 80 or 70 or 60 respectfully.

Anti-aliasing (AA)

Game uses SSAA for cutscenes, but uses low-quality edge smoothing during gameplay.
SMAA via SweetFX[citation needed]
  1. Download custom SweetFX
  2. Extract archive contents to <path-to-game>\bin\x64 and replace DLL's with ones from "x64" folder

Issues fixed

DLC not available through in game menus

Manually verify game files[12]
  • Go into the <path-to-game>\DLC\ folder. Make sure there's no folder named "DLC" in it, there should however be folders named "bob", "ep1" and "DLC1-16".
  • This can be the result of trying to install a mod using the NMM and instead of placing the mod files in <path-to-game>\DLC\ it creates an extra folder.

Hair physics only works correctly when playing at 30 FPS

Use Hair Physics Mod 60FPS[13]

Unable to summon your horse

Save your progress and restart the game[citation needed]

Mouse delay/lag

Turn off in-game GOG overlay Galaxy feature[citation needed]
In the settings, enable Hardware Cursor[citation needed]

Microstutter

Disable GOG Galaxy In-game overlay[citation needed]
If you perceive that the framerate stutters, even if tools such as FRAPS show 60FPS try[citation needed]
  1. Set game frame limit to Unlimited in the Video Menu.
  2. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\user.settings with Notepad and look for a line called "limitfps".
  3. Set it to anything that is above 30 but below 60 (for some reason 30 and 60 locks cause stutter) eg. 31-59.

Framerate drops

Even on high-end GPUs, it is possible to experience choppy framerate when in Novigrad or other large cities. Frame rate capping can provide a fix.
Limit framerate to 60 FPS with Rivatuner[citation needed]
  1. Open Rivatuner statistics server from tray
  2. Add a profile for Witcher 3, by pressing the plus sign in bottom left corner and going to executable
  3. For this profile, enter 60 for FPS limit, hit enter to apply
  4. Enable vsync in game or via video drivers to remove any tearing you may experience after
You can also limit framerate in the in-game graphical options menu, but this may lead to stutter. It is advised to set this as Unlimited if framerate limit is configured via external program.
Prior to patch 1.21, framerate drops and stutter may be caused by the game triggering the garbage colector all the time to save VRAM. To alleviate this simply navigate to <path-to-game>\bin\config\base and open gc.ini. Then find the line with "ObjectMemoryTrigger" and change it's value to 512. In most cases this will fix stutter in novigrad entirely. There is no known way to tweak GC after patch 1.21 because it was redonne from scratch. Now GC will regulate itself based on user's machine.
Other known way is navigating to your <path-to-game>\bin\x64 folder and simply deleting the APEX_ClothingGPU_x64.dll file there has been known to solve some stuttering issues and improve framerates for multiple users ever since launch.

Poor performance on Nvidia Kepler GPUs

This occurs on Kepler GPUs due to issues with certain Nvidia driver versions.
Update to at least the 353.06 WHQL drivers[citation needed]

Axii's alternative mode not working

This bug occurs when points are spent both in Delusion and Puppet
Disable the Delusion upgrade[citation needed]
Alter the delay to use a sign's alternative mode for keyboard[14]
  1. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\input.settings with a text editor.
  2. Find every instance of IK_Q=(Action=CastSignHold,State=Duration,IdleTime=0.2) and set 0.2 to 0.05
  3. Save changes.

Notes

This alters the delay to trigger alternative casting mode from 20ms to 5ms.
Alter the delay to use a sign's alternative mode for gamepad[15]
  1. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\input.settings with a text editor.
  2. Find every instance of IK_Pad_RightTrigger=(Action=CastSignHold,State=Duration,IdleTime=0.2) and set 0.2 to 0.05
  3. Save changes.

Notes

This alters the delay to trigger alternative casting mode from 20ms to 5ms.

Proper HUD positioning for different aspect ratios

For 16:10 change the value of uiVerticalFrameScale to 1.1253.
For 21:9 change the value of uiHorizontalFrameScale to 1.3125.
Edit user.settings config file[citation needed]
  1. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\user.settings with a text editor.
  2. If your aspect ratio is vertically greater than 16:9 increase the value of uiVerticalFrameScale above 1.
  3. If your aspect ratio is horizontally greater than 16:9 increase the value of uiHorizontalFrameScale above 1.

Stutter while using a controller

Edit the config file hidden.ini[citation needed]
  1. Open <path-to-game>\bin\config\base\hidden.ini.
  2. Change LockControlScheme=0 to LockControlScheme=2.
  3. Save the file.

Notes

Stutter occurs because the game rapidly changes between controller and keyboard prompts.
This forces the game to use controller prompts.
There won't be any keyboard prompts even while using keyboard controls.

(Hearts of Stone DLC) Game crashes / minimizes / freezes during a romance scene with Shani

Disable all post-processing options[citation needed]

Mouse input problem/actions mapped to mouse buttons unresponsive

This can be caused by mouse software such as Logitech's SetPoint. Exiting the program before launching the game should fix the problem[citation needed]

Fullscreen Exclusive Mode does not work in Windows 10

Disable Fullscreen Optimizations for witcher3.exe
  1. Locate witcher3.exe under <path-to-game>\bin\x64.
  2. Right Click on witcher3.exe and select Properties.
  3. Go to the Compatibility tab.
  4. Under settings select "Disable fullscreen optimizations" and click OK to save the changes.
  5. Start The Witcher 3 and make sure Fullscreen is selected and not Borderless Fullscreen under video options.

Unable to adjust Gamma in-game

Set Preserve System Gamma to Off
  1. In the main menu go to Options > Video > Graphics
  2. Make sure Display mode is set to Fullscreen
  3. Set Preserve System Gamma to Off
  4. Restart the game
  5. You should now have the Gamma option under Options > Video
  • For Linux users: Add WINEDLLOVERRIDES=dxgi=n %command% in the game's launch options.

Recommended Mods for First-time Players

Many visual and gameplay mods can greatly improve a first-time experience without appreciable drops in framerate or drastic changes to gameplay mechanics. Alternative list

Photo Mode

The Witcher 3 photo mode can be achieved by using internal console command. Camera angle and game condition (time of day, weather, pause/resume, etc.) can be manipulated as needed (also works while in realtime cutscene).
If you have an Nvidia GeForce graphics card, you can use Nvidia Ansel as an alternative—allowing you to take screenshots with an extremely high resolution or 360° field of view. You can also add extra post-processing effects. Ansel can be activated by pressing Alt+F2 while in game.

Instant sign casting

Enable instant sign casting so you don't have to use the radial menu (you don't need the mod files, just follow the instructions on the page).

Improve performance on AMD-based systems

Download Windows 10 based AMD driver libraries[citation needed]
  1. Download the most recent version of Windows AMD drivers - performance boost.
  2. Extract the content of the downloaded archive in <path-to-game>\bin\x64\
  3. Start the game.

Change in-game cinematic framerate

Modify user.settings file[citation needed]
  1. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\user.settings with a text editor.
  2. Change MovieFramerate to which you desire (e.g. 60 or 120).

Disable Cinematic Supersampling

Modify user.settings file[citation needed]
  1. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\user.settings with a text editor.
  2. Add MovieUbersampling=false under [Visuals] section.

Disable radial blur when using Witcher Senses

Modify user.settings file[16]
  1. Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Witcher 3\user.settings with a text editor.
  2. Add MotionSicknessFocusMode=true under [Gameplay] section.

Enable Debug Console

Modify general.ini file[16]
  1. Open The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\bin\config\base\general.ini with a text editor.
  2. Add DBGConsoleOn=true under [General] section.
  3. You can open the console with ` (on an US layout keyboard, might differ for other layouts)

Improve HairWorks performance on AMD hardware

Create a profile via Catalyst Control Center[17]
  1. Create a profile for witcher3.exe in the Catalyst Control Center
  2. Set Tessellation Mode to Override application settings.
  3. Set the Maximum Tessellation Level to either 2x, 4x, 8x or 16x.

Fix Ground Texture Errors on AMD Hardware
