The Matrix Online (abbreviated as MxO) was a sci-fi MMORPG that was initially developed by Monolith Productions and co-published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Sega. Set in the universe of The Matrix film franchise, The Matrix Online was marketed as an official continuation of the storyline of the films and received the blessing of the series' creators, the Wachowskis. As an MMORPG, the story progressed in real time, with players being invited to participate in live events that would influence the development of the story.

The Matrix Online entered closed beta-testing in June 2004 which was then expanded in November 2004 to include people who pre-ordered the game. MxO was officially released exclusively on Windows on March 22, 2005 in the United States and on April 15, 2005 in Europe. It was announced in June 2005 that Warner Bros. had sold the rights to MxO to Sony Online Entertainment, who assumed control of its development and operation on August 15, 2005. Under Sony's direction, live events became smaller and more sporadic in nature.

In June 2009, Sony Online Entertainment decided to discontinue The Matrix Online due to low subscription numbers. The servers were shut down on August 1, 2009, making the game unplayable. Since then, there have been several attempts by modders to reverse-engineer the server code from packets to allow the game to be played on private servers. The most successful of them to date is MXOEmu, an emulation project that allows players to create a character and connect to a private server hosted by the creator where players can explore the original game world and interact with NPCs and other players. As of 2020, MXOEmu remains in active development, with more features planned to be added over time.
