Daggerfall Unity as Essential Improvement

I think, that DF Unity should be moved into "Essential Improvements", because it has all functionality, that original game had now adds many QOLs (like native Windows/MacOS/Linux support, widescreen support etc.), that are essential for modern players to enjoy this game.

I'm all for recommending "engine remasters", at least when they are open and so well crafted and supported (morrowind and openmw may also follow down this path sooner or later).

Also, of course the average user isn't the sharpest tool on the shed, and even key points aren't often enough to underline certain aspects.

But still... even putting aside the preservation argument, we are talking about a complete wheel reinvention. Yes, perhaps it's still the same game "artistically" (with the same story and same extra low res assets and presentation), but every single detail of our tables wouldn't apply anymore.

Hell, technically-wise XnGine to Unity is a far more colossal update than from Skyrim to Skyrim SE (and we have a separate game page for that!).

I agree, that changing whole engine is a big thing, but still, it's the same, exact game with the same, exact story, gameplay, quests, assets and other things as it was in 1996, but modernized in ways, that are essential for modern players. If you are so afraid about leaving DF's site untouched, then you can make new one for this Unity remake/source port.

Sorry, maybe I got carried away a bit too much with some of the discord talking.

I totally agree it's an essential improvement, and it should probably be mentioned in the key points too. Though we may also have a whole article for it at this point.

Though a) I'm not really sure if it should exist as a totally separate page or as a subpage of this one b) I certainly don't have the good will to do this myself - best wishes to anyone else though

  • ugh* DFU is not an essential improvement it's an entirely different game and should be treated as such even if it has the same content.

Characters that can 100% clear Privateer's Hold with little to no effort in the DOS game will hit a brick wall in DFU because of how damage from spells and weapons is calculated.

It is and it's not a different game, because, well, maybe you wish to play games in awful framerate and resolution, but most of the people prefer something more modern and Daggerfall Unity is just right for them.
