widescreen via windows registry

on my PC, there are 2 entries in the registry. the one listed on the page is there but is ignored by the game. instead, i found another entry, and by updating this one i got widescreen working: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Sierra On-Line\Cataclysm

Yeah, it's what the [Note 1] at the end of the registry path mentions:

  • When running this game without Administrator elevation, 32-bit programs writing to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE will be redirected to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node (more details).

We can't really change the listed path in the article since the redirection is being made by Windows -- and only on modern 64-bit versions of Windows which has higher security by default than the old versions of Windows that the game was made for had.

So the [Note 1] at the end of the registry path is the best we can do (this applies to basically all games from this era that stores stuff in the registry).
