Warnings

SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows Vista and later (see Availability for affected versions).

Key points

Based on the Xbox 360 and PlayStaion 3 versions of the game.
Frame rate is capped at 30 FPS. Mouse sensitivity heavily relies on frame rate. See High frame rate.
The PC port is missing several graphical elements such as bloom and motion blur from its console counterparts, as well as having a worse implementation of mipmaps, resulting in worse overall texture quality and visible lines that move along textures with the camera.[citation needed] See Visible mipmap lines on textures.

Save game data location

Notes
Characters can be switched from the start via hex editing the save data. Find ch_[character] and renamed to CH_[CHARACTER].
However, some characters won't be playable in certain missions, change playable characters or enter Daily Bugle during gameplay:
  • CH_SPIDERMAN (Spider-Man):
    • Photo Missions (Black Suit; Lizard 1 included), All Arsenic Candy Missions, Movie 1 and 3 (Black Suit Part 3), Black Suit exclusive Missions
  • CH_BLACKSUIT (Symbiote Spider-Man):
    • Photo Missions (Regular Suit; Lizard 1 included), All Arsenic Candy Missions, Movie 1 and 3 (Regular Suit Part 3)
    • Can be used in New Game Plus.
  • CH_PETER (Peter Parker):
    • Photo Missions (Lizard 1 included), All Arsenic Candy Missions, Movie 3 (Part 3), Black Suit exclusive Missions
    • NOTE: Lizard Mission 2 & Movie Mission 1, as well as getting out of Daily Bugle will have him revert to one of default Spider-Man’s suits
    • Characters won't be speaking outside Photo Mission 2, Movie Mission 1 and Kingpin Mission 1. Safe for cutscenes, though facial animations won't move during gameplay and cutscenes
    • Can be used in New Game Plus.
  • CH_PLAYERGOBLIN (New Goblin):
    • Same Crime Fighting Gameplay as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, except no challenges
    • Not recommended for use during missions, as his abilities aren't the same and can prevent game progression.
System Location
Windows %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Activision\Spider-Man 3\

High frame rate

Frame rate is capped at 30 FPS.
Uncap FPS[citation needed]
  1. Back up <path-to-game>\Game.exe.
  2. Open <path-to-game>\Game.exe with a hex editor such as HxD
  3. Search for 88 88 08 3d
  4. Replace it with 00 00 00 00

Notes

This fix may cause some minor graphical issues with buildings that are far away and Z-fighting effects on some objects. It also causes some moves like Multi Launcher to not work, as well as issues with disarming bombs: unscrewing the front plate with the controller's right stick becomes difficult, but you can use the arrow keys as a workaround. It can also make wall crawling and mouse controls unresponsive.
Due to the game being unable to use multi-core CPUs correctly, high frame rates can be difficult to achieve on modern systems.
It is important to keep the backup as this fix breaks a couple of missions. You will need to use the capped backup for these missions:
  • Mad Bomber mission 3 - Kicking bombs into the ocean doesn't work because they explode in mid-air.
  • Dragon Tail mission 2 - Stopping the helicopter from dropping doesn't work because it drops too quickly to stop.
  • Dr. Connors mission 1 (after removing the black suit) - When all 3 serum ingredients are collected, the game may crash.
  • A random side mission involving the Dragon Tails and bombs inside a bank - The bombs will become too sensitive to movement to be taken outside for disposal.

Ambient Occlusion

HBAO+[3]
This method only works on Nvidia graphics cards.
  1. Open the Spider-Man 3 profile with Nvidia Profile Inspector. If the profile doesn't exist, create it and add Game.exe to it.
  2. Under the 1 - Compatibility section, change the Ambient Occlusion compatibility value to 0x00000002 (lighter AO) or 0x0000000F (heaver AO) based on your preference.
  3. Under the 5 - Common section, change the Ambient Occlusion setting to High quality.
  4. Under the 5 - Common section, change the Ambient Occlusion usage to Enabled.
  5. Press "Apply Changes" in the top-right corner.

Issues unresolved

Extreme audio echo effect

In some areas, the game may have a heavy echo effect on the audio, where music and/or sound effects will echo and become extremely loud, while voices will become difficult to hear. This seems most common in indoor and underground areas, such as the MechaBioCon facility, the subways, and the sewers.

Visible mipmap lines on textures

Due to a bad mipmap implementation, some filtering lines can be seen on textures (especially when wall crawling on city buildings) that reduce the texture quality after each line.

Use dgVoodoo 2 to disable mipmaps.
Unless the selected resolution is extremely high, doing so will create extreme amounts of temporal aliasing (seen as crawling or shimmering on the edges of some objects and textures while moving).
selecting a resolution multiplier through dgVoodoo may also increase the resolution of some shadow maps.

The game suddenly loses audio

Caused by minimizing the game. just don't minimize it or use DXWind to play in windowed mode without borders. in this case, switching between windows does not cause sound problems.

New Game Plus

While the game offers the option to replay most of the missions using the black suit, there is no actual New Game Plus option. If you want to play the game with all upgrades, you can use a modified save file.

Use modified save file for New Game Plus
  1. Open the folder %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Activision\Spider-Man 3.
  2. Rename or back up the main_save_data file in that folder.
  3. Download one of the save files from here, either the "normal" one for a playthrough with both costumes, or "black suit" for a playthrough entirely in the Black Suit.
  4. Place the downloaded file in that folder and name it main_save_data.
  5. Start the game and the game should start from the beginning with all upgrades already unlocked, including all completed crime fighting maps.
