Game displays blank screen

The game renders nothing to the screen under Windows 7 and higher.
Blank screen: Workaround 1
This workaround needs to be applied upon every startup, increasing loading time substancially[7]
  1. Start the game normally
  2. Press R, then ↵ Enter. This will load a random planetary battle
  3. Open menu (Esc) and exit planetary battle mode. You'll end up in the main menu
  4. Close "Pick planetary battle" submenu and you're good to go
Blank screen: Workaround 2[5]
This workaround breaks edge-scrolling in the minimap space travel mode[7]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open cfg.txt.
  3. Find the line which contains Window.
  4. Change the line you found to the following: Window=True
  5. Go to the installation folder.
  6. Right-click on Rangers.exe and select Compatibility Options from the menu which appears.
  7. Click the Compatibility tab.
  8. Check the Run this program in compatibility mode for: checkbox.
  9. In the drop-down menu underneath the checkbox you just checked, select Windows 98/ME.
  10. Click the OK button.
