About the Source Filmmaker

The Source Filmmaker (SFM for short) is a tool that uses Valve's Source engine to create a high quality, modifiable 3D recording that can be either exported as a movie or as a still image.

With The Source Filmmaker, you can essentially film "on location" in your favourite Team Fortress 2 map - Whether it's one that Valve have released or one that you modded yourself. The SFM has a huge library of maps, models, animations, objects, sounds and effects for you to use during production.

Because you're working with a virtual world, and your recording stores all the 3D motion data about every element, you can modify any aspect of the recording at any time, making it very handy to touch up on any last minute changes that would otherwise break the movie.

You can currently get the Source Filmmaker Beta for free on Steam, here - Or, you can visit The Offical Source Filmmaker Website.

Source Filmmaker Beta

Before The Source Filmmaker officially went public, they had a short beta stage, where only a lucky few were chosen to test and try out The Source Filmmaker. Some of the people who tested the beta released YouTube videos, including: "Meet The Family", "Meet The Modern Heavy", "Heavy looses an IQ" and "Stop Meeting The Heavy".

Use of the Source Filmmaker before the beta/official release

A while before The Source Filmmaker was even released as a beta to a lucky few, some people were getting their hands on early development builds of the program. Like some things on the internet, this was not legal, as Valve had not intended for anyone to gain access to the SFM until it was ready and bug-free. Downloading/pirating the early Source Filmmaker build was very complicated, as the files were not hosted on many sites. Once a user downloaded the installer, any working anti-virus would be alerted and would tell you about the "high risk." This was because the files contained viruses.

Obviously, the only available version at that time was very early through the timeline, so the older SFM movies that you may find on YouTube will probably not be as good as the newer ones that use the official release.
