Key points

Essential improvements

Patches

Serious Sam II Patch 2.070. Do not install this if you have the German version as it can cause various problems due to the game's copy protection.[3] The Steam version also doesn't need this patch as it's already updated past this.

Unofficial Linux installer

flibitijibibo has made an unofficial installer that simplifies installation of the game on Linux. If you own the game, download the installer at http://www.flibitijibibo.com/fedora/installers/flibitSam2_2070b.tar.gz.

Running the game in Linux

To run the game, just run serioussam2 in the installation folder. You may have to chmod +x it first.

Serious Editor

To run the editor, just run serioussam2-editor in the installation folder. You may have to chmod +x it first.

Getting audio to work

To get audio working, move to the root of the Serious Sam 2 installation and make a symlink to your 32-bit libopenal.so. For Fedora, it looks like

ln -s /usr/lib/libopenal.so.1 libopenal.so.0

Fix widescreen support (Retail)[5]
  1. Edit <path-to-game>\Content\SeriousSam2\Sam2.ini.
  2. Locate the lines gfx_pixResWidth and gfx_pixResHeight.
  3. Set the values to the desired resolution width and height, respectively.
  4. Locate the line gfx_fAspectRatio.
  5. Set the value to the desired aspect ratio. Use 1.6 for 16:10, 1.777 for 16:9, 2.333 for 21:9.
  6. Save the file. Make sure "Wide Screen" option is enabled in-game.

Field of view (FOV)

Steam version has fixed widescreen FOV (and weapon FOV).[4]
Set custom FOV[5]
  1. Edit <path-to-game>\Content\SeriousSam2\Sam2.ini.
  2. Locate the line [Sam2Game].
  3. Add this line underneath it: plr_fFOVOverride = X;
  4. Replace X with the desired FOV. Default is 80 and maximum is 135. Use 90.4 for 16:10 or 96.4 for 16:9.
  5. Save the file and set it to read only to prevent the game from changing it back.
  6. For the retail version, use Widescreen fix mod v2 to fix weapon FOV.

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/204340/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (204340) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
