Resident Evil 4 is a third-person action horror shooter developed by Capcom, ported by Sourcenext, and published by Ubisoft overseas and Capcom in Japan. It is the fourth mainline installment in the Resident Evil series.

The game was released for the Nintendo GameCube on January 11, 2005, and despite originally being exclusive to that system, it was ported to PlayStation 2 on October 25 the same year. Another port was released for PC on May 15, 2007, however, it was based off the inferior PlayStation 2 port rather than the superior GameCube version, with even more problems than the PlayStation 2 version.[1] The PC version initially shipped with none of the game's original lighting, lower quality textures, and introduced bugs and crashes that were not present in the previous console versions. A patch was eventually released to address these issues and the poor visual downgrades. Despite being released on PC, however, it does not accommodate keyboard and mouse controls as it does not support mouse controls whatsoever, and in-game button prompts only references generic button numbers rather than actual keys from the keyboard. In response to the poor state the initial PC version was released in, Capcom hired QLOC to develop another PC port, which was released through Steam in 2014 as the Ultimate HD Edition.

There was a modding community attempting to fix other issues with the PC version, however, since the release of the Ultimate HD Edition, modders has moved onto creating mods for that version instead.

Patches

The game originally shipped with heavily downgraded visuals compared to the console versions. Patch v1.1.0 drastically enhances graphics, lighting and VFXs, and also fixes crashes which would occur when trying to skip certain cutscenes. The patch for the European, German, and Russian releases can be found here. If the patch fails to update the mid-way through installation, run the patch as administrator.[2]

Mods

High-Res Cutscenes

Greatly improves the resolution and quality of the cutscenes. Can be downloaded here.

Texture Patch 2.0

A high quality texture pack, preserving the essence of the game. Can be downloaded Here. This mod was created by the same creator of the RE4 HD Project mod.

ENBSeries

The lighting/graphical patch greatly improves how the game looks.
May decrease performance.

Resident Evil 4 MouseAim Patch

The game lacks mouse support by default. This unofficial patch implements the ability to aim with the mouse. Can be downloaded here.
May not work at all for some users.[3]

4GB Patch

This tool patches the game executable allowing it to make use of a maximum of 4GB of RAM instead of just 2GB of RAM. It is highly recommended to use this patch if you intend to install mods in the game because this will prevent crashes. Can be downloaded Here.

High Resolution EFF-TPL Texture Replacement Pack v1.1

This will replace the low resolution textures of HUD, menus, fonts, effects (water, fire, blood ...) with high resolution textures. preserving the essence of the game. Can be downloaded here. This mod was created by the same creator of the RE4 HD Project mod.
The game will take longer than usual to start, about a few seconds.
This patch causes a few bugs in the game. Sometimes the videos will be replaced randomly with one of the new textures. It's not very frequent but it's annoying.
Is there an alternative way to install this patch that avoid the cutscene videos issue above mentioned but it seems it's less stable making sometimes the game to crash. It is recommended to have used 4GB Patch to avoid these crashes.

Laser Tweak 1.5

A tool that allows you to change the opacity and color of the laser sight. It also lets you choose a small laser dot and disable the HUD. Can be downloaded Here.
You must have Java installed on your computer to be able to run this tool. You can download the latest version of Java from the official website.

How to bind inputs to analog triggers[2]
  1. Configure your XInput controller as desired through the setup tool.
  2. Open SetupTool.ini with a text editor (e.g. Notepad++). See configuration file(s) location to find this file.
  3. Look for the section [PAD] and bind ReadyKnife to az+ (Left Trigger) and ReadyWeapon to az- (Right Trigger).
  4. Save the changes. You should be able to use Left Trigger for drawing your knife and Right Trigger to draw your weapon.

"This version also received a huge backlash due to it being buggy, lacking several effects, using low quality textures and sounds, lacking lighting on release, and being based on the low quality PlayStation 2 Port, which is inferior when compared to the GameCube and even the PS2 Version itself."
