Key points

Almost all known bugs, and issues resulting from incompatibility with newer versions of Windows can be resolved by installing the Pure Faction patch.

Includes a number of fixes specific to running the game on modern operating systems, however, a more substantial number of fixes can be obtained by downloading the fan-made Pure Faction patch.

Pure Faction

Pure Faction is a fan-made patch currently in its third version designed to improve the game's playability on modern operating systems.
Fixes to almost all known Red Faction issues.
The ability to display the game in any resolution (including widescreen) with a fully functional HUD.
Mouse lag reduction.
Weapon and security bug-fixes.
General improvements and optimizations for NT operating systems such as Windows XP, Vista and 7.
Instructions
Launching through Steam, with overlay, using Pure Faction: You will have to update to the latest beta version of Pure Faction if you want to use the overlay and track your game time. After updating, go to the game directory (mentioned above) and rename RedFaction.exe to RedFaction_org.exe, and PFLauncher.exe to RedFaction.exe. Launch the game through Steam, check your settings in the launcher and start the game. Thanks to Zoid_GER[1] from the Steam Users' Forums.

Widescreen resolution

The Pure Faction patch includes true 16:10 and 16:9 support for widescreen play, including a fix for HUD issues that were previously prevalent in any widescreen fixes.

Multi-monitor

Again, Pure Faction includes native multi-monitor support for 3x1. However, WSGF rated the support grade C due to significant HUD issues affecting gameplay[2].

Field of view (FOV)

Custom FOV settings can be applied by installing the Pure Faction patch[3].

Windowed

A windowed mode can be enabled by installing Pure Faction[3].

Anisotropic filtering (AF)

Bilinear and Trilinear filtering available by default, but Anisotropic Filtering can be forced through the NVIDIA Control Panel.

Anti-aliasing (AA)

Can be forced through the NVIDIA Control Panel[4].
