OpenRCT2 is an open-source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. It implements various fixes, additions, improvements, raised limits and optimizations compared to the original game, while remaining faithful to the original.[2][3]

Despite the code being independent from that of the original game, it requires a full installation of either RCT2 or RCT Classic (as of version 0.4.2) for audio and visual assets, as it does not have a free alternative of its own. Content from RCT1 can be optionally imported if that game is also installed.

The games' scaling to resolution can be manually changed in-game for easier readability by adjusting the Windows scale factor; scales both the in-game graphics as well as the UI.
The game can use multi threading for rendering if selected in the options, which results in a significant performance-boost in most cases.
