Essential improvements

Patches

Only necessary for the DVD-based version of the game, as digital copies already have these included.
Patches for the game can be found here. A PCGW mirror is available here if the official page fails to load.

Universal installer

For the Mac, there is a "universal" installer that makes a hybrid native + Cider port of the game. See here for more info.

Widescreen resolution

Resolutions other than 4:3 will crop the top and bottom of the game potentially obscuring information.
Use Racer_S Universal Resolution Changer v2[3]
  1. Apply the Windowed patch below.
  2. Set the resolution in the game's options menu to 800x600.
  3. Download Universal Resolution Changer.
  4. Unzip contents to <path-to-game>\data.
  5. Open resolution.ini
  6. Change the values as desired.
    • If Windowed is set to 0, then the resolution must match the monitor's.

Windowed

Add game.dsc file[3]
  1. Create a file in <path-to-game>\bin named game.dsc.txt.
  2. Copy and save the following into the file:
    {graphic
    full_screen ( false )
    }
  3. Rename the file to game.dsc.

In 2006, the game received Intel support - rather than making it a universal binary, however; the developers decided to use Cider for this new app.
As a result, the game may be unplayable after 10.7 "Lion" due to this.
Even if it does work, it is still 32-bit only.

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[1] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[2]
  2. 2.0 2.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  3. 3.0 3.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/925940/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (925940) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
