Completely restores music playback
Install the Windows Media Source Filter[1]
  1. Download the Windows Media Source Filter Installer v1.7
  2. Extract the contents from the .zip file into a folder.
  3. Right-click the ApplyPatch.bat in the folder and click "Run as Administrator".
  4. Launch the game, go to "Configuration" and then uncheck the "No Music" box to enable music.

Notes

If the text in the console window is red, then the ApplyPatch.bat needs to be run as Administrator.
Windows Defender may appear with a warning when running the file. Select "More info" and then "Run anyway"
Manual installation of the Windows Media Source Filter[1]
  1. Download the Windows Media Source Filter Installer v1.7
  2. Extract the contents from the .zip file into a folder.
  3. Make a new folder in %WINDIR%\SysWOW64\ called Windows-Media-Source-Filter
  4. Copy drmclien.dll, strmdll.dll, dxmasf.dll and msadds32.ax from the .zip file to the Windows-Media-Source-Filter folder.
  5. Run DSFMgr.exe as administrator and register the dxmasf.dll and msadds32.ax files.
  6. Launch the game, go to "Configuration" and then uncheck the "No Music" box to enable music.

Patches

Patch 1.4 is the latest patch available for the game, it adds new scenarios, options, and bug fixes.

There is a bug that doesn't allow building rights to be activated in one of the tutorials; only present in version 1.4.

Patch 1.3 is the last officially released patch for the game. It generally tends to be more stable than version 1.4.

Issues fixed

Music skipping/looping issues on Windows XP and later

The Windows Media Source Filter must be installed for this to have any effect or use.
No system file modifications are necessary.
Install the qasf.dll[2]
  1. Download the DirectShow - Windows Media Source Filter Installer v1.7
  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded .zip file into a folder.
  3. Copy the qasf 6.03.dll from the .zip file, to the where the game is located at (<path-to-game>).
  4. Move the game from its original installation folder, or else the qasf.dll won't load.
  5. The qasf 6.03.dll that was copied to <path-to-game>, must be renamed to qasf.dll.
  6. Launch the game.

Notes

The game MUST NOT be located where it was originally installed to (<path-to-game>), or else the right qasf.dll won't load.

Software mode graphics corruption

Sets both Direct3D and software rendering modes to 16-bit color.
Reduce color mode to 16-bit; (65536) color
  1. Go to <path-to-game> and right-click mc.exe
  2. Select the Compatibility tab.
  3. Under the Settings section, tick Reduced color mode.
  4. Select 16-bit (66536) color and click Apply.
  5. Launch the game normally, and make sure software mode is selected.

Notes

If software mode is not being used, disable 16-bit color for 32-bit colors.

Issues unresolved

There is a bug in version 1.4 with one of the tutorial levels "Building a Shopping Center" when trying to activate building rights.
When changing stock while the game is running at 4x speed, the amount can change significantly quicker than normal. Be careful!
