Key points

Otherwise known as Might and Magic I
Many different versions of the game exist, with varying degrees of graphical fidelity and additional features, such as voice acting. The only version currently readily sold however is the MS-DOS release.
Because the game was poorly written and its speed is dependent on CPU cycles, the game runs too fast on many computers.

Essential improvements

Where Are We

Supported by Where are we, an automapping and reference utility.

Grid Cartographer

Supported by Grid Cartographer. Its Game Link feature assists in creating the game map. This is not an automap. From the Grid Cartographer's documentation: “This approach enhances the immersion factor by allowing you to draw the map as you perceive it, not revealing every secret ahead of time. Hidden doors remain obscured, traps are left undetected and unsprung. It's still up to you to explore and record what you see on the map as you venture forth!”

Game data

Save game data location

System Location
DOS <path-to-game>\ROSTER.DTA
Windows <path-to-game> (mounted in DOSBox)[Note 1]
Mac OS (Classic)
ROSTER.DTA stores all characters; it must be present to play (an empty file with this name will work).

Save game cloud syncing

Issues fixed

Text appears too fast

This is caused by the game being CPU cycles dependant.
Use text speed patch[3]

Use the Might and Magic 1 text speed patch.

System requirements

Windows
Minimum Recommended
Operating system (OS) XP
Processor (CPU) 1.8 GHz
System memory (RAM) 512 MB
Hard disk drive (HDD) 4 GB
Video card (GPU) DirectX 7 compatible
These are general GOG.com system requirements, the game will run on almost any hardware.

Notes

  1. File/folder structure within the installation folder reflects the path(s) listed for DOS game data. For the GOG.com release, file changes in DOSBox are redirected to <path-to-game>/cloud_saves/ even if GOG Galaxy is not used (this folder contains all redirected files, so some files in the cloud_saves folder might be temporary files or other files that do not contain saves or settings).
